Remember now why I don't have a bunch of JDs. My new to me 1020 needs a new exhaust and muffler. JD only wants about $500 for it. Not going to happen. Muffler shop here I come.

I take it you have the low exhaust model,I took mine to a muffler shop and $60.00 later had a new exhaust pipe to the muffler,my muffler was fine but I would have found a aftermarket to replace it instead of paying JD what they wanted for theirs.

While I'm sure they won't admit it, my local dealer doesn't seem to have near the amount of customers there that they used to. They are definitely starting to price themselves out of the market.

Whining about parts prices again. It must happen every week. The axle brngs in a 8000T series are $2700 each and there are 2 of them. Oh is that a tear falling... I think not.

Careful now ,,, your talking to some guys that use to buy Nickle candy bars....In all honesty I can not see how they got the value of some of this stuff to where it is....

Have you compared prices with other brands? How many of them have parts available for 50 year old tractors?

I've compared with some aftermarket stuff... often times it can be half the price, or less. Quality can be poorer, or can be better than JD. I've had both.

Can be clutch parts for a 70 (got a whole riveted kit with 2 drive disks the floating disk and pulley brake for less than one drive disk at JD) or newer parts (electric actuator for 320D Skid Steer attatchment $910 and change from dealer, $139 plus freight online).

Just looked up the 3pt lower mounting pins on my 430W. They call them TRUNNION,LOAD LINK, M3140T. Takes 2. List is $170.00 ea. I'm pretty sure I've got something that will suffice at the New Holland store where I work for less than $20.00 ea before my discount... I don't need it correct police perfect, I just need it to work. It has to earn it's keep...

On the other side of absurd, we needed a thermostat for our 730LP. Part AA5749R. It goes in the housing right near the water outlet on the head, not up near the radiator like the gas tractor has it. It has a thin wide flange; 2 1/2" or bigger, can't remember now. Deere subs it to AF1710R, which is the model 70LP thermostat which is a thick flanged brass monstrosity for $200.00 now. Actually our price then was $155.00, which was still absurd for a thermostat, but I digress. I called Mother Deere and talked to some lady in charge of parts substitutions, and told her they subbed the part to an older part that won't work when it called for the AA5749R. Her exact response was "well, the part has been substituted now, it's too late to change it. There is nothing I can do." We did try the dealer locator for the AA5749R. One dealer had one he would sell me for $215.00!!!!!!!. Pass. We got one at NAPA that matched the AF1710R for $20.00 or maybe $30.00 and had our local machine shop turn down the flange to fit our housing. Still works.

Deere sure doesn't have the monopoly on hideaously priced parts. New Holland dealer wanted $1000 for a hydraulic pump that I got for $450 at Wothington Ag. They wanted nearly $1000 for a tie rod that goes between the front tires.

I think it has most to do with the fact the manufacturers are getting sick of keeping inventory for 30, 40, 50 year old tractors. They'll do it, but they'll make you pay for it.

Most everything we have has increased 10X. Cars new 64 SS chev $3K,new 69 4020D $10K gum 3 for a dime, candy bars a nickel, land in the 60s $500.Now.Goverment spends $2 million a minute we have a $17 trillion national debt .I know politics and tractors don't mix but it not hard to fiqure out why rare parts cost more than we like. How can you just print more money without the dollar being worth less. Simple math.

When I worked at Deere, not at a dealer, we figured 25% per year of a part's price as carrying cost. That seemed to be about right considering obsolescence, loss, damage, storage, insurance, record keeping, etc.

Seems like you"re just getting the message. I found out 10 years ago, John Deere doesn"t want to support obsolete out dated equipment, they started consolidating dealerships and I knew my old stuff didn"t fit.

Back in the 70's when I was at a dealership the same high price song was being sung. Wish we still were paying those stupid prices.

I agree but then I don't think it is limited to older units as I priced a plastic grill and a seat for a newer model and it sure was HIGH too.
Plenty of high priced parts to go around everywhere.
Be sure to shop around !!!!
Now with the internet it is easier then ever.

I just paid $100 each for two steel hydraulic lines on a 4020. The ones that run from under the dash to the remotes. That seemed like plenty for them, but if these last 45 years like the originals then I guess its not too bad....and someone else can change them next time!!

Its nice they still have the parts - its also understandable that having those parts costs the company as well. BUT Im not gonna sit here and praise the company and fuss at others about stating their complaints about the high prices. Nobody in their right mind should pay that. For guys like me on a budget, Ill just shop around for reasonable after market. If I cant find that, I"ll go another route. Tis funny, when I got in the hobby it was affordable, maybe that is another reason some people are losing interest.

I meant compare JD prices and availability with similar parts for IH, Massey, etc not aftermarket prices.
When I worked for a dealer last century people talked about Deere's high prices but usually were cheaper than other brands.
For example we also had New Holland and the 1 inch locking collar ball bearing from Fafnir was less in the green box than the red box. The New Holland faithful would have fits if you tried to sell them the green boxes.
Also a 4020 head was around $400 as was a WD45 head and no comparison in size.
Similar experiences with IH.
That was before aftermarket parts. And I have no idea how different manufacturers parts compare now. I expect they are the same.

I get parts from Deere as well as CIH, NH, and AGCO and I sure do not catch any breaks from the last three companies that I mentioned in the first sentence. Somebody mentioned 1" bearings and I had to buy several last fall and the Deere supplied bearing was the least expensive. As also mentioned regardless of who it is these companies just do not see the necessity of offering parts for old equipment without a hefty return.

(quoted from post at 10:05:19 06/17/14) You can buy the trunnions on ebay.Someone is making new ones.

Thanks. Dad got it apart today, and the trunions aren't bad, the hitch/ drawbar frame is wallered out though... Off to the machine shop!

Now if I could just find the correct replacement t-stat...

While we are all crying about high priced parts I just came up against this:the reverser switch assembly for a 6210:
AL165301 Lever - LEFT HAND REVERSER ASSY. ADD 1,008.91 USD 1,008.91 USD

Last week I ventured down to the local John Deere dealer's store checking on availability and pricing for some parts I'll need for some work on our '51 John Deere G. I nearly fell off the stool when the parts person told me the cost of the fan drive gear which also mounts the governor eights. This gear is now obsolete but another dealer still had one in stock, the cost is $998!!!

Also needed the lower vertical steering shaft bearing which is also now obsolete. Last summer it was still available for $124.

Deere wanted something like $780 and change plus shipping 2 year ago for a water pump for my '64 2010D. Got a brand new USA-made one off internet for $148 including shipping, and it had the hub/pulley and gasket with it.
