I wouldn't put non-detergent oil in anything but an air compressor pump. Switch to the detergent oil (15W-40 or 10W30).

non detergent is a good oil. Primary reason for non detergent is breaking in an engine. Allows rings and cylinders to finish sizing to each other. Friction modifiers in detergent oil just don't allow that. break in rebuilds with non detergent, unless you want a lifetime smoker.

I'm not sure on an 88, but on an engine that does not have a full flow oil filter, like a 60, I would not switch to detergent oil if it had lots of sludge buildup in it. If it were mine, I would remove the oil pan and valve cover and wash any sludge out with solvent and then use detergent oil.
Using detergent oil for breaking in is fine. I did on my 60 and it does not smoke. Life long smokers come from reusing worn pistons/cylinders with new rings.
