moving 71 4320 wheels

I am moving the wheels out on my 4320 and I was wondering if there were any tricks to get the rack and pinion part to break free. The wedges popped loose but I cannot get the rest to move. Is heat my best option?

a big sledge hammer and hammer on the end of the axle will help brake them loose that how we had to move the ones on our 4020s.

If you have the wedge removed we remove the center from the axle(let axle down and with a hoist remove) Blow out with air and soak with PB blaster and try a 3/4 drive rachet if it moves work it back and forth till you can put an air wrench on it for final losening. The axle grooves fill with dirt and the pinion rusts in place,if you take the center off they usually free up without heat.

Sounds like you pinion bolt is rusted in the hub. us a good punch with the end squared up nice (this keeps it from mushrooming the pinion bolt) and drive it out,put it on the bench grinder and clean it up,lube it and drive it back into the cog.

I have in the past had the same problem. Jack up the side that is stuck and block the front tires. Start the tractor and put it in 6 gear. Get the wheel spinning and apply the brake. This will allow the weight of the spinning wheel to break loose the wedges.

We use an electric jack hammer on the end of the axel. It's amazing the wheels just fall apart. We bought one just for this but if you only have it to do this time home depot rents them for around thirty dollars for four hours. It save a lot of cussing and back breaking- Joel

I don't think that is very safe df,,not that I'm a safety expert :) but all kinds of bad "could" happen doing that...

I have operated my own repair shop for 20+ years. I have had to remove the hubs off of many John Deeres. There are a few very simple, and easy tricks. Give me a call and I can exlpain how to build a simple tool that will pop them loose every time. 231.757.0064 Ask for Al

It appears that you have the wedges broke loose which can be a challenge. The problem lies in the rack and pinion which as Tim S. states is stuck. If you can remove the wedge you will be able to lube it and hopefully get it broke loose.A pipe the same diameter as outside axle with an outward lip can help get wedge loose without damaging axle and hammer method works also .Would not recomend dfs method buy might work.In my opinion get pinion bolt loose and wheel will move.[should]
