moving hitch ahead

Today I helped my daughter move the hoop on her Farmall M ahead 6 inches. Going to see if it helps having the hitch at 18" from the center of axle compared to 24". What does every one else think?

depends, M's are nose heavy in original form so sometimes a little longer hitch helps make down pull if the front end isn't raising up.It takes trial and error. Others will say shortest is always best but I don't agree with that.

As I have said before there is a reason for the 18 inch rule. Never seen a limit for how far back a hitch could go. Just a thought!

Just be careful the shorter the hitch the more force it takes to raise the front end of the tractor. In turn when the front end does come up it will come up fast. Tell your daughter to be careful. The 18" rule is for safety

I agree sometimes longer is better. But in our neck of the woods, most all of the tracks are some form of clay or gumbo. Keeping the front down is the deal. Us here in the midwest tend to forget that. The reason for 18 inches is without it, tractors with out-board final drives would win all the time. Eugene Sellers wrote a article in the Hook. He contended that a long hitch and a heavy front would put more weight on his rear tires. (he is right) but it is very hard to do.
