Moving Wheels

I'm looking at having to move a couple of tractors, one's an A, the other a B. Both have the wheels set too wide to fit onto a trailer. What special tools or items do i need to shift the wheels in on the axles? I've done it on other JD's before--a 4430, 4440, 4020, and my Farmall 756, but haven't really looked at these that close. The tractors are 3 hours away, so hoping I can line up tools before I go down. Is it similar to the larger deeres--use push bolts to push the wedges out then move the wheel on the axle? I'm pretty sure both have cast centers.

No they are much different than the later Deere hubs. Your A & B have a splined axel with a clamp that draws the splined center tight to the axel. The clamp is usually no problem, but the splines rust tight to the axel,I have used a chan and a jack to pull them out, they can be "very" nasty to get loose.

In all honesty, it would seem to me best to hire someone (or borrow) a trailer that would be wide enough to haul these tractors home and then work on them there. You will be time ahead in the long run. It may take you all day (or longer) just to do ONE of them. Get the tractors home, let them soak for some time, and then go to work on them would be my advice for you. Mike

Good luck getting them to slide... The worst part is once you do get them to move, you'll have an even harder time keeping them in place in the future. BTDT

Been there! Had to hire trucker to move the tractor, after a full day of frustration trying to move the wheels. Hire a bigger trailer and work on them at home. The answer that once they are loose you may not ge them tight again is true. I ended up laying a bead of weld on one spline to keep one wheel from sliding outward.
The other tightened up just fine.

If you can get the clamps off, Jack the wheel up and rotate it and while it is turning, hit the brake..that should help work your Penetrating oil into the splines..
I usually use a chain, wrapped around the axle housing, caught on the Mounting Bolts and thru the wheel center, to pull the wheel in...
I use a longer loop of chain from the raised wheel Center, to the drawbar of another tractor, to pull the wheel OUT..just turn the wheel and wind till the chain gets tight..
Penetrating oil will probably end up being your Friend..!!

Just my two cents but i took a circle of 1" plate steel about 12 inches across and drilled 3 holes to match the same bolt pattern as the bolt holes for the collar and then got 3 grade 8 bolts 10" long by 3/4" diameter and a case of 3/4" washers and used that to pull my hubs completley off wire wheeled the axle shafts and wire brused the inner splines of the hub and then they reasemble very easily, never had one not stay tight even on the pulling "B" I will try to get some pictures of my set up today.
