Mower Identification help Please

Can you guys help me with an identification of this mower? I need a deck spindle, but can not find any type identification on the mower itself.

It has a shaft driven deck with hydraulic raise, a Kohler engine, Hi-Lo transaxle and hydrostatic transmission. I'm not sure of the paint scheme or decals. I'm guessing them to be someones creation.

Thanks!!

I'm guessing too but it looks like an MTD. With the Kohler K in the chassis and the start/gen unit in place, I'd be thinking that this tractor dates back to the early to mid-70's. Perhaps no newer than 1977.

MTD made all kinds of "House Brand" tractors for small, medium and large store chains all across the country. Most likely, that's what you have.

You could try joining external_link and posting that machine in the MTD forum. People more familiar with the early MTD's might be able to pin down what you have so that you can get parts.

The other option would be to log onto MTD's own website and then contact them. As you will see, MTD now manufactures several well-known brands such as Cub Cadet, White, Bolens, Troy-built etc, along with their own.

Thanks guys! I'm a lot closer than I was before, as I had no idea.

For the fellow that suggested about the rims, it does in fact have 15" rims.

Perhaps with some brands that is true but for Case garden tractors, the start/gen system was in use to at least 1977.

it is an mtd "990" model tractor.they billed them as subcompacts back when they were built.they were competion for tractors like the big wheeled case's,1250 bolens, wheel horse gt14,wheel horse D (all these tractors used 15 or 16 inch rear wheels, had long wheelbases, optional 3 point hitchs etc.the mtd "990"s were built under several names with farm king being one.they had 14,15,and 16hp cast iron briggs engines,15 inch rear wheels 3 bolt front wheel hubs 50 inch wheelbase 2 speed hi-lo range hydro tranny, true shaft drive and optional 3 point rear hitch among other features.chances are thats a big block cast iron briggs in your tractor,if not its been changed.i have owned 3 of these tractors and still have 2.mtd continued to built these big tractors at least until around 2000 but they were cheapened up versions and they model number for them would be "998".as suggested above go to external_link then go to the garden tractor section then to the mtd section for lots of good info on these tough old tractors.btw i think the original style 990 was built until around 1980(and used the starter gen setup.as mentioned above case and some other manufactures used the starter gen setup well into the late 70's.

That appears to be an old Roper tractor. Roper used a lot of them shallow decks ilke that one has. Take spindle out, post a picture, then I might be able to help identify it a lot closer.

btw,the original manuals for your tractor are still availible from mtd.i just downloaded and printed them a few weeks ago.they can be had free.

It is a MTD. If you have not gotten a manual off the MTD website, enter a model number of 146-990 and serial no. 1 and it should pull up a manual for a 1976 model. Some times it takes a while for the manuals to download. This is a 1976 or later model. This has the late model lift for the mowing deck that came out in 1976. The 3 digit prefix determines the year model. 146 = 1976, 147 = 1977, 148 = 1978, 149 = 1979. It looks like this tractor may have been repainted, but some times the model and serail number are on stickers on the bottom side of the plastic dash panel which may not have been painted over.

I have a 1975 model labeled as a Whites and a 1977 model labelled as a MTD. Both have a one cylinder 16 HP B&S engine with Starter Generator. The one in the picture looks like a B&S engine instead of a Kohler. The Engine number should be stamped into the flywheel cover near the bottom on the right side right in from of the carbuerator. It is probably a 326400 series B&S.

I have found that most bearings, etc. are standard sized that can be found at most any bearing supply store. I have found that a lot of other brands have non-standard sizes that are very expensive. A lot of the parts for these tractors are obsolete, but I just ordered an obsolete part for a mowing deck from a place on ebay in Indiana that supposedly has a lot of NOS parts for these old MTDs.

BTW, the model number for the 42" "Quick Connect" Rotary Mower deck is 190-982. You should be able to download a manual with parts list for this deck as well from the MTD Website. I have not tried lately, but I seem to remember that you may need to leave out the dash - when entering the model number and use serial no. 1.

FINALLY! I found out what I have! One just like it! That's a big briggs single if it's original,16HP.Biggest they made and what a powerhouse! I need a parts manual if possible from somebody.I'm not going to use the deck, or part with it, but need info.on attachments.Well made frame, would like small loader attachment. Have snow blade.Seen one with plow attachments. Could acsess xtra hydralic pump off of blade PTO. possibilities endless.
