Mower question

I am looking at buying a new mower for my 1948 TE20. I have a four foot 3 pointed mounted one now. But I have never had much luck with it. The lift arms either go up or down. They won"t hold a position. This is fine for plowing or posthole digging and such. But it is very frustrating to mow with. I have been reading a lot about the pull type mowers. But I have heard a lot of people say they are a hassle and the joints wear out fast. Have any of you used a pull type on your tractor? I don"t see how they can be that bad if DOT usses them all the time to mow the ditches. Any input would be appreciated.

How about using limiter chains with your 3 point rotary mower? They work great and don"t put any stress on your hydraulics.

I am sorry I can not give credit to who posted the info. But a gentleman gave important info on how to adjust a bush hog/mower, just by adjusting the top link. I used it and it does work. Can not descibe to detail, but basicly you lift your mower/bush hog, drop it down to a 4"x4" adjust the top link to the point where the presure leaves the adjustment. Sorry if I may of missed a step, but the archives will help you with this. Good luck Terry

I have read some about this. Do you know of any websites or pics that I could look at so that I can see how they hook up. I could have something discribed to me all day long. But if I had a picture then it would make more sense.

the reason you cannot hold a position with your brushhog is because the ferguson tractors do not have a position control they are either all the way up or down you have to do what someone already suggested put chains on it to limit how far down it can go i did this with my to30 for years works great actually good luck and always be safe those things can be mighty dangerous take youe time and dont try to go real fast you dont want to get knocked out of the seat. be carefull RICK

Oh i'm not going to do anything foolish. This isn't my only tractor. I also have an Allis Chalmers 5040 and a 1957 Oliver OC4 dozer. I would like to use the bush hog on the back of the Fergie when things get a little too grown up, and leave the finishing mower on the back of the Allis. The finishing mower is such a pain to get on and off.

Oh, and the pull type looked like it was a lot easier to take on and off. I would still like to hear if anyone has had any good or bad expierences.

Here is the link by marlowe that talks about using the 3 pt system to maitain mower height http://www.ytmag.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=ferg&th=44701

This will not work for my application. Mine either goes up or down. I have tried to play with it and find a sweet spot. I think I have it and I look behind me and it is either in the air or mowing the dirt. So the leveler controls are not an option for me.
