Mt heating issues

Had My Mt warmed up the other day and it is getting extremely hot, 200 just sitting idleing. Felt the bottom hose and it is cool as can be. Any suggestions as to what to look for?

Thermostat stuck? If the water pump doesn't have a bypass hose, look to see if there is a 1/8th hole through it. If not, you can drill one through it to let the hot water heat up the stat. Now, I don't know if the MT even has a water pump, but if it does, check if the impeller is loose on the shaft.

Probably lots of posts on this, but the temperature indicated is not very accurate on M & MT tractors. It can show very hot when the coolant actually is not that hot. The position of the temp. sensor was moved on later models to eliminate the false indication problem.

200 is not a hot temp for the M series tractors. The bottom hose should be cool. The thermo-siphon systems works by the hot liquid rising through the motor flowing through the rad and back into the engine via the bottom hose once it has been cooled. Your system is working correctly if it's doing what you say. Check your rad to see if it's plugged with debris. The coolant also cannot be filled to the top of the filler neck. Owners manual calls for 3.5 gallons of fluid which in my MT filled to below the filler neck base where it meets the rad. Also if you have an older model the temp probe was close to the exhaust manifold. There was a heat shield there and most tractors have lost this over time. When I added this back to my MT my temp reading dropped a bit.

My 1948 M will peg the temp gauge by just driving down the road on a hot day let alone when actually doing any work. Never boils over or anything, just reads really hot. When working hard in the field the bottom water pipe will be warm but nowhere near hot. Between my dad and I we have owned this tractor for over 25 years and it has been that way the whole time. Like others have indicated, I have also learned on this forum that early tractors such as mine had the temp sensor in a bad place and chronically read high so I don't worry about it.

Since werew talking about gauges, what color are the MT guages suppossed to be? I have a white and two black ones on mine. The black ones are JD and have part numbers, never looked to see if they were correct though. If one were to try and please the correct police, what color should they be?

Hotflash-Had the overheating problem with my JD MT. You can crack the head or blow a head gasket if you overheat it too much. I drained the anti-freeze and replaced with clean water and Shazam, it ran much cooler. Water is a more thermo-siphonable liquid and flows around the cooling circuit at lower temp(my opinion). Put anti-freeze back in cooling system when done with hard work. Its inconveinent, but less risk to head.

They were all white faced. I have the same colour's as you. Only my orig oil pressure is white. I don't know when Deere started subbing the black faces but it was over 30 years ago. I'm going to order a set of white's from Evergreen for my last one when I get started on it just cause I like them better.

A very late 52 M could possibly have black faced gauges. Late A's and B's had them from the factory about the time the water pumps started showing up on them. Also R's, AR-AO's from late 52-on could have black faced too.

Hmmm.... thats good info because my oil gauge has the correct part number on it but it is a black face. The amp gauge I replaced with a white face was some off brand and I'll have to double check my temp gauge. Not sure if that has a part number or is just a JD gauge.

I have a JD 2940 tractor that gets hot after running it for a while. The top hose is hot--the lower hose is cool. A mech told me it was the thermostats, it has two, well I changed the thermostats and it still gets hot. I was informed by a Jd mech that it came out with a plastic impeller in the water pump. I guessd I will have to tear it down and see. Roy
