Multi-weight oil

[Perplexed]

I have always used 30w oil in my old 2590, but have often thought it would be nice to be able to use 15-40 like other engines. I always thought Case wanted straight grade oils in their engines. Have any of you had problems using multi-weight oils in these engines? Thanks.

Here goes WWIII. I say, after talking with CASE engineers & Sun Oil Tech's, that 15W40 is preferred. Multigrades are far better today than 25 years ago. it's all we use here, Gas engines, or Diesel.

I hope 15w-40 can be used for a 504 because thats whats in mine now.

I have 2- 2290's, a 1570, 1070, and 7120. The ONLY one I put 15-40 in is my 7120. Both 2290"s I completely out of frame overhauled, line bored, fixed counter bores, etc. from top to bottom and both of them I put 15-40 case/ih oil in. Both were overhauled at separate shops and separate machine shops did the work. Both made it to 50 hours and ruined the engines! Both were overhauled again and used straight 30W ALL YEAR, and both are still going strong 13 years later! I will never use 15-40 in any Case engine! That is purely my own opinion and I know others have their"s, but I know what has worked and not worked for my operation. By the way.... no problems with PS or PTO ever knock on wood

We use 15-40 in everything gas and diesel. We had a 1070 that we used it in for years and I currently have a 1030 has 200 hours on it since the complete out of frame rebuild. Never had a problem with either of them. If you had 2 engines that had less than 50 hours on them and they went bad I would suspect the rebuilders. I have rebuilt many engines and always used 15-40 from the first start, never have I had a problem.

The only engines that I would highly recommend using straight 30wt are the screamig Jimmies. If someone that claims you must only use 30wt in the Case engines can give me a technical reason I sure would appreciate it. Been using 15-40wt for at least 20 years. Have several tractors with well over 6000 hrs. The fleet includes 2-1070, 3-1270, 1-1370, 2-2290, 1-2294, 1-2390, 1-2590, TR86, TR97, and grain trucks/semi with a 9.0L IH, Formula 230 Cummins, 6-71T Detroit, and Big Cam 4. Only one that gets 30wt is the DD.

My main Case partsman (who I trust 100%)attends CNH oil seminars as part of his job and Case still wants 30w in pre- magnum Case and IH tractors. It aint broke so I am not going to fix it and I listen to his advice.

I have used 15-40 ever since in came out. and about five years ago I started using Amsoil 15-40, never have had an oil related problem.

Do you pull samples of the Amsoil? How many hours are you running between oil changes? I ask because I run Amsoil but have yet to put it in any of the tractors. Just put 9 gallons (a whole lotta money!) in the semi and hoping to get 30k or more outta it.

Cummins engines have wider bearings than Case engines. That is why they went to 15-40 for cummins powered tractors,combines, skid steers etc. You have good tractors.

This post always starts a good fight. Your 2590 should have 30w in it. If you are going to use it in the winter I have no problem with 15-40 for winter use. When you take it to the field in the spring and summer put 30w in it.

Don't waste your money on Amsoil. Any OEM oil(Case,Deere,Cat) will proble spec out better than that stuff. No oil is going to save a worn out engine.

wellhale! , now WHO is RITE ??? .got 15 w 40 texaco ursa in my 1070,800,430 and 4020 jd dodge cummins diesels,, same in SC , VAC , 730.taurus and 318 dodge gassers ,, use 40 wt.ONLY in DC 'cause had that drummed in my head by POP and great uncles since i was born .. (50 wt racing oil if gonna make the ol gent work hard in the summer ). . Whats a guy to do?. understandably . sum of you guys don't want to start a holy oil war , and will not post ,. so please feel free to e-mail your experienced and learned opinion ,, because i need to know what is best for the AGRIKINGS that do not use oil ,,. ps , that deer has a sound rebuilt motor and has always used a qt of oil in a hard long day .. jd mechanix claim that is nature of beast to use a little oil/ just like ALL caddilac motors use a little oil // wth . hard to duck the truth

I can guarantee that those oils will not spec out better than Amsoil. I have seen the analysis reports for most of them and it isn't even close. Of course it comes with a cost but in the long run it ends up being cheaper and better oil to boot.

There is more surface area on the wider bearings and therefor you do not need a heavier oil.

Engine oil turns black from contamination from combustion. If Amsoil is so good AND they tell you you can increase your service intervals why doesn't Amsoil suspend the contaminates so they are caught in the oil filter? Ask your oil guy this, they won't know what to say. I change my oil to get the contaminates OUT, not run dirty oil longer.

I beleive what they do is keep those contaminates from grouping together. Still in there but in really small partical sizes as to not harm anything.
