Multimaster oscillating tool

Consider purchasing a FEIN Multimaster tool. See link. The tool bit oscillates through maybe one or two degrees with high frequency.
Does anyone of you have good or bad experiences with this (or similar) tool? Does it cut through steel too?
I've seen it used a few times and it seems to be a tool that you wish you had earlier once you have used it a couple of times.
Simplest version costs approx. US$ 200.
Appreciate your comments. Thanks, Hendrik
FEIN Multimaster tool

I got one from HF for about $25, very useful tool. Not looking foreword to buying replacement attachments. Works great for cutting into existing drywall, trim etc. Have not tried cutting metal. Wear hearing protection!

That particular brand is not avaible here in the states. The Harbor Freight ones I have 2 of and in remodiling the house last year they got a lot of use with cutting wood and drywall but you hit a nail and the cutter is shot, I have not found a cutter for metal. In sanding cabinets for finnishing it is working good.

I have used a harbor freight model and was sure glad I had it. For flooring and other jobs no other tool can get in and do what it can. The replacement cutters are better then the ones that come with it and some are made to cut nails and tubing.

Not sure what Leroy is talking about that the FEIN tool isn't available in the US - it's available all over the place if you do a google search for fein multimaster. I have had the multimaster for maybe four years or so and love it. Fein blades are expensive, but they seem to last much longer than some of the off brand replacement blades I've tried (can't remember what company made them). There was a good torture test done on some of the various blades available for these tools (FIne Homebuilding issue 222 "Torture Test: Multitool Blades" by Justin Fink).

I haven't used any of the other brands of multitool. I know from personal experience that the Multimaster feels extremely well built and I expect it to last forever. But it was very expensive

If you need metal cutting blades for multitools do a search on Google for "fein metal cutting blades"

I have the Dremel version and found it very useful trimming out a house remodel. I can't imagine any tool that would work better for trimming a door jamb if you want to slip a piece of hardwood floor under it. First time I saw one my contractor was cutting a rectangular hole in some existing siding. My reaction on seeing it was "What is this wonderful tool!" He let me try it out and I was hooked. His was cordless, mine is corded.

I bought the Harbor Freight version figuring it was for a one time job in remodeling a house. Since then the thing has become almost the greatest thing around. I changed out a window sill and it was unequaled in it's ability to get in tight spots. I like the soft start feature of the variable speed one. One thing I found the blades can't handle is a Stainless Steel siding nail. It took the teeth of the metal cutting blade in a whiff. all in all it is a great design for a tool and is very versatile.

I have a Porter Cable brand one and love it. Very well built and the blades swap out without a tool. Certian jobs I can"t remember how I would have done it in the past. Several brands of them out there now, I got mine on sale for around $115

Thank you all for your comments and practical insights. Especially noteworthy is the cost of the replacement blades and cutters.
I think I've just got an idea for a birthday present for my wife ;-)

You'll wonder why you never got it before... That seems like a lot of money for a Fein.... Do you folks have the WORX brand in your big box stores??? Maybe check ebay for mannesmann or something close.
I bought the WORX set (big tuff, box couple blades, plenty of sandpaper, and something else) for I think 80 euro at OBI...
Places like ALDI, NORMA, and LIDL (I guess you have those stores there) almost always have sandpaper assortments for cheap.. NORMA has even had the tools a couple of times for around 50 euro..

Have fun..

(quoted from post at 04:00:42 06/08/12) HF has their brand one on sale this weekend, parking lot sale, it's either $15.99, or $16.99.

Been buying HF stuff for the neighbor kid quite a bit. Got him a transformer to step down to the 110/115 volt stuff and he really likes the stuff... He's been on some cordless stuff a little over a year of beat it up work and is happy......

+1 on the Dremel, I have the multimax. I've only used it 3 or 4 times. Much easier, for my task, than using a saw-zall or a jigsaw. Replacement blades aint cheap.

Have fun.....don t. .....
