multiple parts

Went to our local Agland JD dealer in Northeast Alberta for an o'ring that should cost $1.50 but turned out to be over ten dollars. But they did not stock it. Was told that they could order but it only comes in packs of 5 and I would have to take all five. What gives? I used to be a partsman way back and never heard of that policy and would have never put my customer in this situation. Is this a policy that Deere puts on to their dealers or is it the dealerships's policy put on their customers? Was also told that any item not stocked comes under this policy. Are we the ones that have to stock our own parts now? How are things in other parts of North America.

herritige jd , about 13 or so dealerships is becoming a sell new stuff no parts stocking. bigger isnt better

I have run into this at other dealers too. If I don't figure I will use all of whatever the part is in the future I go elsewhere for it. otherwise I just go with it. If I can get the part elsewhere. My dealer has been pretty good about parts for the most part. They are all getting finicky about parts for older stuff.I guess to some extent I can understand part of it also. Inventory costs money and they probably sit on over a million dollars worth of parts as it is per store. So to have a lot of parts setting around unsold costs a lot of money and fills up inventory fast. Not trying to stick up for them just trying to explain the whys and wheres of it. Even you local chain box stores have this issue.

The JD dealer I use, Heritage in Joplin, MO, has always ordered anything I've needed for very old implements and my 1966 1020. On a multiple pack item, they've sold me the amount I needed, not the entire pack. Usually here within 1-2 days.

I have encountered that for years. I'm in Ohio USA. If they don't stock it and it comes only so many to a pack you have to take all of them.

When I need o rings to rebuild hydraulic cylinders, I have a local mom/pop place that I can get o rings and if they don't have them they order them.

Have you tried Napa or auto parts stores?

Amazon has many O ring kits.
WCC 770 Pcs Rubber O Rings Kit 18 Size Universal Nitrile NBR Washer Gasket Assortment Set for Automotive Faucet Pressure Plumbing Sealing Repair,Air or Gas Connections,Resist Oil and Heat

That sounds like a bargain price from a dealer to me! Five seems like a small quantity. They can afford to stock only what sells. Picture yourself having to have a system within 1,500 square feet where you can not only stock but also find all the parts that everyone thinks that the dealer should have just for their own machines.

Every brand is that way and have been for years. Dealer discretion to break package. The one that still gets me is rear main seal for 172 Ford engine. Says on package 2 pieces and they are priced each, so who puts in 1/2 a rear main seal.

i have a 685 that broke 2 rear studs . case ih dealer had to order . order came in said comes in a package of 5 you now own 5 . i live between 2 different dealer ships 15 miles in each direction. so now i go to the other dealership for the more unusual parts . both chains have multiple stores you'd think they could spread out the left over parts to the other stores

They don't want to get stuck with the other four. They order the pack of 5 at $50, sell you one at $10, and sit on the rest until they rot away. Net loss of $40 of revenue.

Past policy of being "nice" to the customer resulted in tens of thousands of dollars of unsold NOS parts, that nobody will ever come looking for, accumulating in local dealer stockrooms. All of that is lost money for the dealership and manufacturer. It adds up.

If they sold these o-rings regularly they would stock them. You're probably the first person in 20 years to come in looking for one, and it'll be another 20 before someone else comes looking, if ever.

I just went through this on an IH disk with the area Case IH dealer. Wheel bearing caps come in bags of 5 and I would have to purchase the whole bag. Fortunately, that disk uses the same caps as the JD 347 baler I have. I picked up a single cap which was in stock at the area JD dealer on the way home from an auction yesterday.

The money is in fixing the new technology electronics at $150 an hour including the trip there and back it fix in the field.

Stocking parts is old school, no money in that. Ordering and charging extra service and shipping fees, thats the money in parts.

Really isnt any service in the service industry any more.

Back in the 50s we were a manufaturing country.

Transitioned to a service industry country into this century.

Now we are transitioning into something else, Im not really sure what.

Do t blame the dealer as he needs to order 5 and only sell 1. Fine I get the math. Can we blame Seere, they should be packaging just 1 then if that is what their equipment requires to repair?

Most of us try to go to a Napa or similar supply store for the common items any more, cut the manufacturer and deal out entirely when we can with the crazy price markups they have. Do they blame us for not coming back for common parts?

Agreed. I just bought three snap rings from them. No grief about needing to take a whole package or whatever. About $3 per, and I have not idea where I'd get the specific ones for the application from elsewhere.
