multispark problem

What is wrong with my Summit Racing multispark ignition box. All of the wires are hooked up correct according to instructions. It would run on what seemed like two cylinders for about ten seconds. Now it won't start period. The light flashes when you turn the key to indicate that the unit is functioning properly. When I crank the engine the light doesn't flash as it should. This according to the instructions means that my pickup method isn't working. The white wire is connected directly to the post coming out of the distributor. What is wrong with it?

Welllll. Testing is in order. A manual will tell you how to diagnose the sending unit. From here it is wrong for us to suggest methods due to the sensitive nature of some trigger assemblies. If you are no where near the dealer, Google the company for help. JimN

If you have that on a tractor you are wasting your money. If you have it on a car or truck you are wasting your money.

I am using the points as the trigger. It is not a waste of money, this tractor is hopped up a good bit. A regular system wasn't good enough.

Ignition "ON", Points "open"... check the voltage at the distributor's primary terminal with a digital voltmeter.

Then, rotate the engine so the points are "closed", then check the voltage again.

What do you see?

If that's the case, it sure sounds like the "box" should be getting a trigger signal.

Perhaps it was an "out of the box" failure, or could it have been jolted by someone having boosted the battery backwards, or connected the battery up backwards?

I seem to remember your earlier post regarding the ignition box, and it seems to me you said you had it set on six cylinder mode. I don't know if you have changed this situation, but a four cylinder engine will not run on a six cylinder firing setup as the six cylinder fires every 120 degrees and (correct me if I'm wrong) a four cylinder fires at 90 or 180 degrees (usually). If this issue has been addressed, please disregard this post...Randy
