murray garden tractor

Welll Not that I beleive you, I do have a true story about Murray.

Some ten years ago I bought a Murray box store mower. 14.5hp, 42" deck, Shift on the fly job. Still cuttin grass today ($700). Neighbor bought about the same time a JD (not sure of model) but it was 18hp with 48" deck and Hydro ($4800). Deck gave it up 3 years ago (rust). Flat quit running last year. Just spent another $6000 for a new JD.

Now if you go by yardage, we are cutting close to the same. Difference is, I cut mine at least twice a month during the season. He might cut his twice a year.

If treated the same the name brand would likely out last store box. But If my store box can last half as long as your name brand, I'll happily buy two $1000 mowers to one $5000 all day long.

Murray of Ohio who built Murray lawn mowers went BUST. Briggs & Stratton ow own the Murray name. Tecumseh went BUST. Someone is trying to bring the name back by putting it on engine made by China's LCT.

Not to start an argument but I owned one Murray and one Murray bike. Both were junk. The mower I had to replace screws and bolts before I used it or added little braces were the metal ripped. Finally gave it away. The bike I could never find parts for and gave it away also. Oh, I don't buy Big Box Store mowers either.

I used to think so too.

When I was in High School, I saved up and bought a 36" cut 11 hp Murray. I used it to cut my yard for about 25 years and back then I cut the neighbor's yard for a year or so too. I still have it (Herloom, you know) and it last cut grass in about 2005 or 2006.

It was kinda like George Washington's axe, though, Had 2 engines (The first was ringed once)
and on its third deck.

The later Murrays I see in the shop have deck problems,-suddenly drop all the way to the ground- and the consoles crack for no good reason. Just cheaper made I guess.

I will argue about the Tecumseh engine. The Briggs was way way better.

I had a neighbor that used Murray mowers for years. When he retired he bought a new John Deere rider. He allways said he wanted a John Deere but after he got it he wished he had bought a Murray because the first 2 years the John Deere was in the shop more than he used it.

Sorry can not agree. Them Tecumseh engines are JUNK from day one. Ya I worked on many of both B/S and the Tecumseh's and found that the Tecumseh did not last near as long. That said I own a 1967 Murry with a B/S engine and the thing is still a runner

Tecumseh made very good, reliable engines, most people who cuss them don't know how to work on them. Their ignition was a lil tricky, but their carbs were more fuel effivient than anything briggs made and pretty dependable with no diaphram that had to be replaced every year as Briggs did on anything less than a 5 hp engine.
Tecumshe never had valve seat problems that briggs did, but Tecumseh did have problems with valve sticking in guides. So they all had their own issues, but Tecumseh "did" make very good engines.....
now they are LCT, China engines and........

I have a black Murray Special Edition "industrial/commercial" 42" 16hp Tecumseh (bought it new). I believe it"s about a "96. 6 speed shift on the right fender, 6 level deck, blade engagement on the dash to the left of the steering wheel.

I have searched every inch of that mower and there is no nameplate. Can"t even find mounting holes or a "shadow" where it may have been.

Anyone have any info on this mower?

I saw too many Tecumseh engines with thrown connecting rods.I think they made me stop doing small engine repair.Lots of rewind problems too.

(quoted from post at 07:42:09 10/13/11) best dang tractor in the whole dang universe...

...as long as it"s equipped with a tecumseh engine...

Must be some good stuff u been smokn'......I guess if all you are doing is mowing but a GARDEN trator is just that, a tractor that is designed to use ground engaging implements like a plow or tiller besides being able to mow. I sold a GT this summer that I owned for over 10 years that mowed 5 acres a week for 6 monts a year, blew snow on a 1/8 mile drive and plowed and did other tillage work for a 1 acre garden. I really don't think a murry would have done that......cost in repairs was 250 to overhaul the Kohler one time and a fuel pump. And the tractor is a 1974 Wheel Horse.
