My First Stuck Clutch

Hopped on the old Allis Chalmers B today at work to re-position it and treat the gas for winter. After charging the battery and a little arguing it started up. I went to shift into reverse and sure enough gears that wouldn't stop spinning. Thanks to ytmag I knew why. That tractor has been sitting for a couple months and the clutch plates were stuck together. I had plenty of room in the shop so I started the engine in gear and was able to get it outside. I shut it off, shifted into first, held the brakes down and hit the starter. It bumped loose really easily. Went out and slipped the clutch a bunch to shine it up. Parked that tractor in it's place and blocked the clutch pedal so it wouldn't happen again. Little things like that, knowing what's wrong and taking care of it can make a guy feel purdy good.

'Course, you have to be a little discriminating in what advice in a thread you follow- as I recall, there were some on that thread that advocated starting the tractor in gear and running it into a tree to break the clutch loose. I believe that comes under the catetory, "If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is."

Heard a funny story.

Two fellas trying to get a rear brake unstuck towed this hapless Dodge Raider around many miles. They drug it till the rear tire was well through the cords and had developed one heck of a flat spot. At this point they pulled it back up the driveway and left it pointed uphill and disconnected the tow chain. When they were beside the car discussing options, they heard an ominous "TINK" and the car took off backwards down the hill.

Fortunately a tree was there to stop the fun and my buddy bought the thing minus the rear door for 175 bucks.

I suppose they never thought to pull it backwards....
