My small plan for spring

Well, gonna keep it real small this 1st year, just have a funny feeling that its gonna be another dry year. I am gonna leave the 7 acres of rye that I seeded last fall, hoping that Rye will be high again and that I can sell the straw I dont need, will follow that the next year with soybeans. Also 7-8 acres of corn, still have to decide on the seed, will probably be on 36" rows as that is the planter I own, and the closest combine I can borrow is 36", will follow that feild with beans. Lot of trash on that feild, plus saved enough chicken poop to cover that feild. Last, 10 acres will be soybeans RR I still plan on drilling on 14" spacing, following spring it'll be corn. The 10 acres I can rent for $10/acre will not be a good plot if we have a drought, so I am planning on either leaving it sit till fall and go with winter wheat or rye. If I remember oats need fertile soil and decent rain to produce a nice crop. Small potatoes I know, but at leastI will get a taste and learn something before I rent an additional adjacent 60 acres next spring. Planning on trying a preemergent and use RR seed so I can clean it up if needed. Oh yeah, all most forgot , I will also have the ussual 2 acres of sweetcorn, been making good money off that!

Sounds like a reasonable plan.

I do want to disagree with mr Schwiebert. RR corn on top of RR beans is a recipe for disaster. Your situation is a little different with the small grains.

In my area it is exclusivly Corn and Beans. I fear in a few years the big guys that are using the RR on RR program are going to be in trouble and the ground will be a mess. If you want a worry free corn production look at Liberty Corn and RR soybeans.

I just replied on what I belive was your last email, but not sure, something goofy happened in my outlook email and I lost alot of emails. Must have been one from the wife that got lost also cause she was all mad this am, something about her pants are tight, she gained some wieght and some how it's my fault. I offered a god work out routine for her, but she told me to go to sleeep!

The farmer that ran the land for the last 20+ years did nothing but RR bean/corn rotations, the last 2 years I did notice very poor kill and very thick crop of lambsquarters, he was always min till, with last 3 years no till. Last falls crop was covered under drought insurance and had to be disced in. I am expecting to have some issues with volunteer corn as it was pretty darned good corn in places.

You're all heart Dave! Putting your wife's concerns before your day's plans. I gotta suspect your offer only added fuel to an already hot fire.

Continuous RR year after year is going to be a disaster as you will start getting resistant weeds and then we will all be screwed. I think about every third year a good dose of a preemerge that is Atrazine based on corn is still a good idea.

Also on small acreage you can walk the fields and any weeds that are obvious "escapes" can be chopped, sprayed, burned or whatever other type of vengance you can think of.

Oats likes cold, wet springs. Doesn"t like hot, dry summers. All in the timing- wet spring and decent rain early summer, it can still do well on lighter soil. I was raised in southwestern Stearns county, and in the 50s, before irrigation got popular, we typically raised much better oats than corn. If rains slacked off by July, the corn was poor. I agree that tossing in a year of Liberty every few years is a good idea.

So I would have to have seed that is has the Libery Link trait? Kinda like round up corn, or wont it bother regular corn. This is all kinda new to me, never thought it would be so frustrating to pick out seed for corn and beans. What I have figured out is I better buy a seed that holds up well to drought. Will probably go with Johnson seed, just kinda confused about which to get.

Dave if it was RR corn last year you may have to add a little Fusian to the Roundup to kill the corn.

And yes if you want to use Liberty you have to use corn that has the Liberty resisant gene.

i wonder if we will need to go back to using moldboard plows because of resistant weeds.
that way we will bury some of the weed seeds deep enough to keep them from growing for a few years.
some of the no -till guys have gone back to chisel plowing to help with trash build up with continuous corn
