N series identity question

I got an N series which came along with another purchase. I never owned a tractor before and now I'm hooked. I have five, A Farmall 130, a Ferguson TO-30 and three Fords. I was told this N series was a 1939 9N which was re-engined in 1945. The engine serial is 9N 196878 which corresponds to the story, but the hood and fenders have the Ford scripts on them and I thought that that didn't happen until late 1950.
Perhaps the metalwork was also changed after 1950. Are there any ways to distinguish what year it is by looking for casting marks on the transmission or drive? I'm making up a list of what I've got and I'm not sure of this one.

The best way to tell if you have a 9N is the three speed transmission, and the brake pedals located one on each side. That to me would make the tractor a 9N. You can check the casting marks on the rear axle housings to see if the correspond to the correct years of manufacturing for the 9N.
Parts that easily can be replaced like sheet metal can be replaced with what is available at the time. Not every one is or was interested in keeping the tractors original.

Sounds like a mutt to me. 9N made from 1939-1942, 2N from 1942-1947 and 8N from 1948-1952. That engine would be a 2N engine. From what I understand theres a casting date under the rear end of the tractor which would give you an idea of when the rear end was made. I have one about like what you have it has a 2N engine and a 9N rear end, plus a sherman over drive

Thankyou Jerry and old.I have finally got it straight now. I have a 1949 8N with a 1945 engine in it. The sheetmetal was changed later. I can salvage that and put it on my 1951 8N. Get new for the 49 without the Ford script. That still leaves me looking for a 9N. I'll know what to look for now. TkTkTk you guys.

Me again. Looked under both tractors, found numbers. Can anyone match them up? Both rear transmissions have the casting number 8N 4024.
The hybrid one has a plate just under the casting number which reads 1SH A20.The gearbox
plate reads 1SH C7. The other one reads 2SH H22 and 2SH H21 respectively. Any ideas?

Stewart, I don't know wher you are located, but I have a 1940 9n(#14453) for sale. It is pretty much in original condition,32"wheels,aluminum dash, good motor. In Michigan.$1750

Steve.
I live in South Louisiana. Although I'm origionally from Scotland I lived and worked most of my shoreside life in Africa and the middle and far east. The rest of my time was spent engineering on the big ships. I love road trips but I don't like cold snow and ice. If you still have the 9N when May comes around give me a call. 985 518 8912. I can hire a U-haul trailer up there I'm sure.

Jerry, tried sending you an e-mail but the connection failed. I liked the St. Jude project. Who do I get in touch with around Louisiana to give them one of my 8N's?

Sorry I can not help you with that one. You might want to contact John Smith about his project and how it was set up. Good Luck.
