NAA 12 Volt conversion a pain

A while back I inherited a Jubilee from a recently deceased family member who really must have hated me.
It appears he was in the middle of some upgrades when the Reaper knocked on his door.
What I was left with was a tractor stripped of everything 6 volt, and a brand new unopened box containing a 12 volt conversion. Thanks to sounDguy I quickly understood how to wire things. But..................these little nags are killing my good demeanor.
First. When the alternator is mounted in it's new brackets the original belt is too loose. Not a problem I say. Off to NAPA and get a belt 1 inch shorter.
Well, that is too tight. It jams the alternator body into the governor linkage.
Upon close inspection I see that the original belt is a bit stretched and worn down so that it is making contact and bottoming out on the water pump pulley. Off to NAPA again (the dog loves all these trips) get a new belt of the original size 5/8 X 41.
Now, finally this fits but it is very tight. And, added to the problem, the two spade terminals are in such a position that they are almost touching the governor linkage.
At one point I thought the easiest solution was to lengthen the top adjustable bracket in order to use a longer belt. However, if the alternator moves out any further the adjustable bracket hits the alternator fan.
I know there are simple solutions to all these minor problems but I have 10 year old nephews who could design something better. And my mother always did say that that particular uncle was always an a-hole

Take the 4 screws out of the back of the altenator and reindex it.Be carefull to not brake the brushes or field wires.

"Never look a gift horse in the mouth"..If this little problem is all you are facing, you have NO problems at all.

Like dave said if its a new alt. it "should" be easy to take the screws out and turn the housing on the alt 90 degrees either way so the spade terminals clear. It should be fine as long as you don't pull the back off the alt if you do you will need a pin to hold the brushes in while you reassemble it.

If its a Delco 10si that was in the kit,the rear housing can be turned 4 different ways.Just remove the 4 bolts that holds the front and rear housings together and split it apart.Trick,Insert a toothpick or a small piece of Farmers Friend (bailin wire) in the small holes to retain the two brushes letting the toothpick stick out the back side of the rear housing.Turn it the way you need it and bolt it back together,remove the toothpick to release the brushes and bolt it back on.

Turn the back in any orientation, you want, as compared to the front.

As long as the 4 bolts hit the holes.

Yeah, but you don't know the malice that dwelled in this man's mind. This is just the electric parts. I have yet to get deep enough into this to find the rest of the booby-traps he left me. Maybe I should have been nicer to him!!!

My 6v 600 started right up after being idle for 3 months.I checked the battery monthly with a hydrometer.No battery maintainers or chargers needed.I would look for the 6v parts and put them back on the tractor.

Everything else being equal I would probably leave it at 6 volt also. However, Ian already has a complete 12 volt system on hand at no cost. As they don't sell conversions kits to go from 12 volt to 6 volt it is going to get a bit expensive for him. Generator, battery, regulator etc. $250.00 ?
And I personally feel that a well working 12 volt is better than a well working 6 volt.
