Need carb adjust help 55 960

Starting tractor for the first time I didn"t have spark. I"ve got that now. It"s a 55 960 gas with a TSX 593 Marvel Schrebler carb. But it"s very hard to start it and keep it running now. If I let it sit (air cleaner off), wipe the extra fuel from the carb opening, I can choke it and get it to start for few seconds and it runs smooth for those few seconds. I don"t think the distributor is installed wrong and I don"t think it"s position(timing) is too far off. I"m thinking my problem is in the carb. First let me say that the I&T manual is severly lacking in many are including the carb - no reasonable description of the the adjustment and no diagram of the various parts. There are three adjustments that I see, the idle speed screw on the linkage, what looks like a small idle mixture screw, and finally a large brass knob near the fuel inlet. I"m not sure what that big one is. Is it just a max fuel adjustment or something. What should the initial setting of the idle mixture and the big knob be? What"s the proper way to adjust them when running? Has anyone written any better manual on these tractors? Thanks, Brad

Oh I should also mention that this is a clean restoration. Before that I had sticky carb needle issues, but it was usually when the tractor hadn't been run in a long time(over the winter?), and once I had it running regularly, didn't seem to be a problem anymore. I'm not sure if It could be stuck open now, but given the situation I should have been able to get it running and keep it running. When I choke it all the way I get extra fuel running to the bottom of the carb and some dribbles out the inlet, but I wipe it with a paper towel and fuel does not continue to come in.

I'm familiar with the smaller M-S carbs but they pretty much are the same with the exception of jet sizes and venturi throat area.
The M-S carbs are very senstive to float setting. If it's not just right, it'll flood.
Also the float valve can get a set it the Viton tip on the needle can cause leaking. Make sure the float valve is screwed down really tight or it can leak around the valve.

When it floods, don't choke it; open the throttle wide open to lean out the overly rich mixture.
It probably won't hurt to do a good carb cleaning and put a carb kit in it. Make sure that your adjustments are close to the recomendations. That usually 1-1/4 turn out on the main jet and about 1/2 turn out on the idle air.(The idle mix screw controls air not fuel so it's bass ackwards. To enrich, you screw it inward.)

Hope this helps you.

Ditto what Jerry said.. seat both screws and open to about 1.5 turns as a rough start.. the idle air screw only makes a big difference at low rpm..

Your description is not totally clear to me.
The big knob screw nearest the fuel inlet, is this what you're calling the main jet(open 1.25 turns inital setting)?
Before I had started restoring the tractor, I had been through all the carb problems(1.5 years ago). I had put a new kit in it then, and it was working great so for this restoration of the tractor, all I did was touch up the cosmetics on the carb. I did lose my old settings though and didn't write down what they were unfortunately.
Thank you for any assistance. Brad

Hi Brad; Here's the instructions from the Ford Shop Manual. A second page to follow. Sorry, I haven't mastered the multiple photo thing.

Glen,

I assume you are still using the Classic View. I think you have to use HTML in the Classic veiw to post multiple photos. However, in the Modern View, it is a piece of cake. Copy an image address, paste it in, highlight it and hit the Img "button" above. Repeat for as many photos as you like. Thanks for all of your great input and help on the Board.

Sweet. Thanks guys. Hopefully I can try after work tomorrow.
Glen, where did you get that manual? Do they make a repro for my tractor? If not, where should I look for an original? I am so sick of the lame I&T manual. FYI, I did get oil to the top end when cranking, and I got spark by swapping out coils (3) and wires and dist cap. The first two coils I couldn't get spark to jump from coil wire to block, then I the third it seems like I got it? When I get it running like a top, I'll switch back the original components one at a time to see if one of them was at fault, or if that wasn't my problem at all.

Thanks Chris. Yep, still in the classic view. I've been lazy about learning the multiple photo trick. I saw your poll. It wouldn't register a vote. Not sure what you see on your end. I see your post in the classic view. Does it make any difference which you use? Are they both compatible with each other? I guess I'll have to experiment. Take care.

Brad; You can buy them from this site; Faxon at the link below. They have a nice set of 3, Shop Manual, Parts Catalog and Owner's Manual. Each is a repro. You can get them on ebay however I have read you must be careful of the quality. I'd try Faxon.

Glen,

When you click on the link in Classic View, on the poll question, it actually takes you to Modern View. You should be able to respond to the question there. Both Classic and Modern Views show the same info., just in different formats. To get to Modern View you just have to click on "Modern View" in the upper righthand corner of the comments box. From Modern View, you can click on Classic View to return.

One of the advantages of Modern View is that it pulls a post forward each time there is a response. Thus, you don't have to page back two or three pages to look and see if someone has responded to your post. As soon as a response is posted, it goes to the top of the list. Much easier and quicker if you are trying to keep up with mulitiple posts.
