need help for plowing scenario

I have a 130 acre field to plow. The trouble is it was plowed about 3 springs ago and was never disked. The owner asked me to plow it than disk it. Should i try to disc it only or plow first than disk. I will be pulling a 4 bottom plow with an allis 185. Approx how long will I be plowing also?

Well, is it heavy thick sod? If it is then you might have to plow which will take a while. If it is not heavy sod, hit it with a disc, then field cultivate it in a couple weeks, so as to let it rot down a little. What are your plans also for the field?

The field is in furros as we speak. The owner wants the furros out. it will be polwed and disced until it is smooth. It will be brushhoged twice a year after that.

Sounds like someone really made a mess of this field? Plowed it three years ago, left it and now it has turned into a weed infested, grown over mess?

Got a good heavy disc? Hit 'er two or three times at differing angles and leave the plow set in the barn.

Plowing will take about 50 hours and it will be a rough ride. The plow will vary it's depth quite a bit also if you have a gauge wheel on land. I guess it will be a rough ride whatever you do, but try the heavy disk first and see what it does, it will take half the hours. Do you have duals on the tractor? You will need them or your tractor will spend too much time and power trying to spin and climb out of the ruts, and your body will take a little less punishment with duals on. It's fall now so the ground will be harder. The fewer hours spent going over it the first time, the better your body will like you. Jim

Anyhow, you can plow 2 acres an hour, maybe more. Can't drive too fast, one wheel is in the furrow & smooth anyhow.

Most plows will do about 1/2 acre per hour per bottom. In rough ground you need to drive slower. Given the existing ruts, you'll be plugging up a lot. Heavy offset plowing disk would work better, and it will take several passes. I have some pasture land that a previous owner left that way.

Personally I would leave it to someone with the proper equipment your tractor and plow is way to small. You need an 8 or 10 bottom plow and the tractor to pull it. Doing a 130 acres for yourself and you don't care about how long it will take is OK but doing it for someone else then you need to get it done as fast and as cheap as you can so bigger is better in this situation. Or call for a plow day and get all the old timers to come out and have fun with their antiques. I bet you get it all done in weekend and no cost to the owner.

If the owner had this plowed three years and has left it lay since then it might be a good thing to stay away from for several reasons. Lee

I'd chisel plow 90 degrees to the way it was plowed last time and hit it with an offset disk
