Need some ideas

Been haveing big time coon problem. Been likely I haven't lost any chickens yet but if it keep up I will. This coon has found a way around or over my eletric fence and has so far ripped off the roof vent on my one house and on the other one a screen off the window. Only place I know of that he might be getting past the hot wire is the gate area. So I guess I need to figure out how to put the hot wire in the gate area but at this time not sure how to do that with out getting zapped when we go into the pin. Need ideas on how to stop this one. Saw it last night but could see it well enough to shot it or it would be dead right now.

Set out a pan of "raccoon refreshment" in a location the 'coon will get to, but not your pets.

Would be nice if I could but I have barn cats and my dogs go in and out all day so I don't think that would work unless I put it on the roof where it ripped off that vent. But I may just try that on the roof tonight if I can find any anti freeze to use that is

Would one of those buried Dog Retainers work? My self,My dad and my Grand Dad have all over the years sat up with a 410 Shotgun at night and the problem soon goes away quickly. Pick a good Moon night and keep a watch for a moving shadow. Living in MO. and out in the country as you do, don't you have a good Coon Dog?
We have an 11 year old Yellow Lab who falls in love with every one and anything so she is not much good at Guarding but our I/2 Pug,1/2 ChiHooHoo[as Barney used to say] is on top of every sound and smell that floats around and is ready to fight anything no matter the size. Get a good Dog,Train him to hate coons and maybe the problem solved.Sweet Corn time is near if not already there.What do you do about them in the Corn? This is MHO

Old - -can you get or borrow one of those "Have-a-Heart" live traps? They sure work well here in central Illinois to capture raccoons when baited with about anything - - though, the local coons sure seem to love marshmallows.

You could place it outside your gate, or even on the roof, where hopefully the coon will be but your dogs and cats won"t be. If you catch a cat - -simply let it go and re-set trap.

Those "Have-a-Heart" live traps or similar that John suggested work very well. You'll have that raccoon trapped in no time.

Now what you do with the raccoon after you catch it is your business. Just remember the trap does have spaces in it so a bullet will pass or if you take it somewhere to let it go it'll probably be home before you are. :wink:

Shoot em. Bait them in and then shoot them. Dont be humane, years ago a corn field near me was being ruined by coons. A guy was hired to come in and shoot as many as he could, he shot 24 of them. Dont be nice.

Fella I worked with several years ago and a few neighbors got together to hire a guy to do that. first night he got twelve, second night he got ten, third night he got got pulling in field with seventeen in back of his truck.

I have been useing one of those off and on. We switch it back and forth between me and my moms house. I plan on setting it tonight in the area I saw the coon last night. But this one seems to be very smart so I don't know if he will fall for it. Last time I had it set up something would trip the trap but not be in it, sure hope it wasn't this coon because if it was it probably will not work

I use a live trap to catch them. Then when I go check on it, If I have one I turn it loose but.... it have to out run the dogs. They have some pretty good battle.

Both of these work. Live trap and either cat food or KFC chicken works like a charm.. Can"t say what to do with the live trapped masked bandit. Only way to rid yourself of the problem.

To protect livestock from predators, you can either kill them or keep them out. Other posts covered killing them pretty well.
I'm sure a coon can climb your gate. To electrify gate, run wire where you want it on gate and make a hook and eye in the wire-no insulation. Farm supply places have a knife switch you can fasten the two wires to, put it on your post or some other convenient place, throw switch off and unhook wire when you want to open gate.

They love eggs too. Mix up a GM tonic and one down--- You probably have several. Son watched them raid the hog feeder one evening, a couple years ago. He counted 12 free loaders at one time. If you trap them and release them, I have been told you have to take them more than 5 miles or they will find their way back home.Any I trap get a lead injection.GM and baby pig pellets get coons , rats and mice real fast. Maybe you could feed your pets real well before sundown and then set out a pan of pig pellets or a Coca Cola highball.

Catch and release works, but only if you release at least 5 superhighway intersections away from home! Make sure he has to cross about 20 lanes of traffic to get back home.

If you have wood post at the gate, they make an insulator that nails or screws into a wood post that sticks out about 6 inches. Could you put on on each post close to the ground and put a insulated gate handel on it? Unhook, toss to the side when you go in, hook back on the way out. Just an idea if you allready have a hot wire there. My uncle keeps two live box type traps in his garden all summer. Hauls two or three a week 10 miles up the road. He has very little damage. I have enough dogs around that they do not get to close to the house. Coons run off, slick tails try!

Once I taped a maglight style flashlight to the barrel of my 12 gauge and adjsted the beam dia. to the size of my pattern. Then I didn't have to take time aiming or have a friend with the spotlight...just point and shoot.

you want to get rid of some. a friend of mine uses electric fence but not on a fencer, right to 110. he gets alot of them. just remember to unplug it in the morning.

We have coon trouble here in So.IL I use the combo live trap, bear trap, and the 12 ga or 45 acp which ever handy at the time. If you use the live trap best thing to do is shoot it because I was catching one every week and taking it out of town 15-20 mile. It looked like the same one every time so I marked it once with paint sure enough it was the same one. After that I shot it and no more for awhile. The bear trap you need to stay on top of since they can get out if left in to long but usualy don't come back.

The best live trap bait is a can of sardines.Just open a little bit with the pull tab then wire the pull tab to the trap.I used cat food in cans but they always cleaned up the bait with out springing the trap.The Hav A Hart trap has the poorest trigger of any trap on the market.If you release a racoon they wont enter a live trap again.

Bob, how much Flybait kills those "flies". It isn't working for me. They love the little treat of blue morsels in coke. Drink it up and ask for more.
