negative voltage on ammeter

okay guys :) Here goes this... New ignition switch is now installed. Still reading negative amps unless I hit the cutout , does the cutout need to be wired between the ignition switch and the battery so staying stuck open all the time doesn't drain the battery into the generator? It is confusing. I am rebuilding the carb tomorrow as suggested by the mechanic.
thanks,
Caroline

cutout is between the battery and generator. If it staying closed until you tap on it, then the points are sticking or the spring is too weak. Either case, replace the cutout. I use a switch on my john deere for the same purpose. Just have to remember to turn it on to charge and to turn it off when i shut the machine down.

If I remember correctly, Dell told her to turn her genny charge rate down.

It may be turned down too much to kick the cut out in.

Or I could just be off my rocker.

Caroline........didja remember to "re-polarize" yer cut-out like I taught you??? Just "arc-spark" yer 2-terminals together with a clippie, engine OFF. Iff'n ya don't, the cut-out will stick.

And why are you rebuilding yer carb??? What mechanic???.....the jealous Dell

If the genny out put was too low to kick in the cutout, it would not be stuck closed after running. the shunt winding has to be good or the points would not close in the first place, so that leaves the points just sticking or the spring which opens the points is too weak or out of adjutment.

you may be right, the book does say that the cutout opening voltage should be 0.5-1.5 volts less than closing voltage or 6 amps maximum reverse current @ 6.0 volts minimum.

would be interesting to crank up the output veltage of the genny and see what happens.

okay the cutout was new this year after last year's new one. I did turn down the voltage on the genny to about 5 amps at 1/2 throttle. I can turn it up and see what happens I guess. Carb rebuild I had planned to do, and now it is time. The mechanic was pretty sure it would help the tractor. He was concerned about the cutout not working appropriately. I have arc sparc'd it so many times now it isnt funny!

the cutout has two sets of windings. the series winding and the shunt winding. when the generator is working current flows from the generator to the series winding and on thru the shunt winding, creating a mag. field which closes the points alowwing current flow to the battery. when the generator stops procucing current flow, the battery will send current flow back thru the shunt winding creating a mag field with the opposite polariatry, it is a weaker mag field and the spring in the cutout should be strong enough to open the points. so during normal operation the core will be re-polarized every run-stop cycle.

Maybe your fingers just got ahead of brain..happened to me before........but this statement is just flat wrong.
"when the generator stops procucing current flow, the battery will send current flow back thru the shunt winding creating a mag field with the opposite polariatry,"

(quoted from post at 00:45:03 05/13/09) If it is flat wrong , then you tell me how is does work!
You get points for 'close'.

""when the generator stops procucing current flow, the battery will send current flow back thru the shunt {change SHUNT to SERIES & you are good} winding creating a mag field with the opposite polariatry,"

Just so damn picky aren't I? Just one stinking word!

The point I was trying to make was that the core has to be de-matized for the points to open. I thought it was the function of the shunt winding that did that. then the function of the shunt winding is to provide the series winding with a ground source? makes sense I think.
Thanks!

Did some research and now see that it is the shunt winding that first magitizes the core to close the points.

thanks for pointing out my error on this.

Right, I was WRONG. The current flow is thru the shunt winding to close points and then revevsed thru the series to open them. Basically.
