New Holland 855

Does the New Holland 855 Round Baler make a much better bale than the 851 ??? I am thinking of trying to upgrade a little and am leaning towards an 855 but wanted some feedback, how tight of bale does the 855 make?

The 855 makes a much nicer bale then a 851. Lots of them around here. The only real problem I hear is the keeping the air bags up. Not a big deal but they do get holes/cracks in them and need to be replaced. I don't have one but a few neighbors do.

Way, way WAY better,

Just make sure you get the auto-tie. Ya really don't want that electric or hydraulic tie.

This is good news to hear, I also appreciate the heads up on Auto Tie versus the electric tie. I had read elsewhere about the electric tie being slow and a PITA... I know some people hate the chain balers, but I actually like them, have seen too many belt balers burn in the field.... I do not do allot of hay, but a few hundred a year, would like to see the bales stand up a little better thru the winter, seems like I loose a quite a bit of hay to rot, can't afford to build a barn big enough to put 200 plus bales in either.

Thanks guys for the help.

The 855 is head and shoulders above the 850, 851 and 852. They took out the floor chains and replaced it with a solid drum. Less problems bailing and way easier to start a bale with the open throat design. I had a Bale Command model and I really liked it. The 855 will make a 5x6 bale and if you want a little smaller bale the 853 is the same baler that makes a 5x5 bale. I agree with Casey that the air bags can go out every now and then and they are pricey though New Holland but I found them much cheaper at the local truck supply store. I only replaced mine once in 10 years. Good luck!

The chain balers with the drum in the bottom rather than floor chains make a heck of a nice bale. I think you'll like that 855.

Awesome to hear this, I actually like my 851, and was finally figuring out how to make what I thought were really nice bales with it this year, then it broke one of the bearing carriers and almost started on fire, I have it mostly taken apart, will take some fabricating to fix as the part is not available. I may still fix it to have as a backup, but thinking finding an 855 is going to be top priority. Thinking the bales will hold up better.

Like going from those old style that rolled the hay along the ground to a well a baler and it will start and cut the twine every time and the twine is way way way tighter

Ok, now I am finding most that are available anywhere near me are electric tie, how bad is this??? I also have noticed the electric tie are typically cheaper, likely due to electric tie?

My New Holland is hydraulic tie, and it works good. My Vermeer baler is electric tie, and works better than the hydraulic tie on the New Holland. I don't know about New Holland's method of electric tie, but on my Vermeer it works great.

I just found a good used 855, with auto-tie! The bags appear to hold, and the chains appear to have been replaced and look good, the sprockets appear to be in good shape. The kicker is not on it, the dealer believes they have it, but it was bent and they took it off, if he can find it he will throw it in, if not he said he would sell me the parts at cost to replace it? I am thinking I could make something work, hoping he finds the bent one, i know i can straighten it out. Now I'm ready for spring, want to test it out....
