New Style Steps on 4020

I'm thinking about mounting a new style step on my 4020. Can anyone give me feedback on a good one to buy? And, how do they mount? It looks like the JD brand mounts to the frame and battery box...? I don't want to drill holes in my battery box. Has anyone had luck with other brands? Thank you for your feedback! Merry Christmas to all!

I have the John Deere steps on my 4020. They bolt where you remove the original step (two bolts) and also to one of the existing bolts from bell housing to engine (above step). Nothing to do with battery box. They are very solid - I really like them. They come two steps and have a kit available to add a third

Hi, I have an old 4020 that I have decided its a life time restoration. it looks rough but starts and drives like a dream, with the power shift. I havent had it to long but find myself using it all the time. The first thing I did was bolt on a JD new style steps. they are awesome, and Im only 43years old. you can go up and down them with out missing. the hand rail is also great. I had a bracket made up to bolt onto the side frame and where the original step was. its very solid. I have downloaded a pix of my prize, dont laugh. its paid for. hope someday the rest of it shines as good as the steps.
bottom line is now john deere offers a bracket to put these steps onto the 3020 and 4020s and they are priced right. I am going to be buying more of them for some other tractors. believe me I use to jump off these tractors when in a hurry and that soon catches up to ya. And all of you out there know what I mean when you miss that first original step and it scrapes your shin from foot to knee.
Go price them at your JD dealer and then buy one. You will REALLY like it. Merry Christmas

I would think you could fabricate a bracket to have them fit any two cylinder tractor. that is a real neat idea. only ever seen them put on new generation tractors. maybe someone else out there has a pix of them on a 2 cylinder?

Do yourself a favor, get the Deere steps. Others I've seen are not nearly as good but will work.

Anything can be made work but you will have a problem clearing the flywheel cover and still having the top step close enough to the floorboard. Fabricating or modifying the steps for the rear of axle might work better.

Hi,
We sell the K&m product in our store so I put a set on my 4430,4440, 2090,2290,1030case,544IH.The set on the 1030 case was a set for a 4430 John Deere,But with very little retro fitting it work great.
Yes,the person that design the steps on thee older tractors should have had give pay for a year.
Ih555 You will love a set of steps on that 4020 and maybe even put them on other tractors you have.

K&M are popular and JD also has them probably made for A&I.As to question on fitting 730 probably not.Jds little rectangular original step was a little high for tractors with 38in rubber.

Yes it seems that the 2 Bangers were meant to be mounted from the rear, and those with a 3 pt hitch it makes them even harder to get on and off of.. I make a nice step that mounts on the axle housing, but it won't work with a 3pt,,and that is the main reason that I don't use a 3pt on mine,

I have the JD step kit on all my 2510's, 2520's and now the 4020 I purchased this spring. I also have K&M on one tractor. The K&M is OK but the JD is much sturdier. I had to beef-up my K&M set up as I am a big person. The JD step does not mount to the battery box. It mounts to the frame rail, the clutch housing, and one bolt to where the old step was. On the 25xx the clutch housing tang I cut off as it does not fit the 25xx. It is still rock solid. See Picture. Paul

very nice steps and tractors paul. I thought I was the only one who run new gen. tractors without hoods once and a while. I find its simpler to run them that way and fix all the little problems. power wash them clean and fix all the leaks. when thats all done on goes the hood to stay.
I grew up on a 4020 and 3020. just seems you cant find a better tractor to drive for the price of them.

What is the ballpark cost on:
a) the Deere steps (as pictured with handrail)?
b) the K&M steps (as pictured with handrail)?

I paid about $325 for my John Deere step in 2008. Dad added another step about 18 inches off the ground making it much easier for him to get on and off. Hes is 85 and can now still use this tractor.

Have a 4020 with 158 loader. Anyone add the JD steps to a setup like this ?
I saw the elevator style lift someone posted on here before. It looked very slick.

Dad has the newer style steps your asking about on this 3020 and he really likes them. The only thing I will say that I don't like, is there is a gap off the side of the platform where the battery box is located.

On Dad's 2520 and 4020 he had a local welder make up some steps and there is a step just off the platform, so when on the 3020 I am used to taking that extra step and you have to watch yourself as it's not there.

I try to post a picture of each style. I really like the style the welder welded up as they are still out of the way for being out in the woods and that lower 3rd step if on in the newer style isn't going to catch anything, yet they are easy to get on and off.

I have a JD and one from Abilene Machine the one from A M has 3 steps and much easier to get on the tractor and less money 215.00 that"s the one for me.

A few years ago, I slipped on some steps and tore my left knee apart. I knew it would be along time before I could get on my 4020 with a 148 loader, so I had John Deere come out and put their "fancy" steps on the tractor. The loader mount was partialy in the way so they had to have a welding shop add an ear where it mounts to the bell housing of the clutch. They are great! I put a set on my 4440 too. I also put K&M steps on the 4320 with a hiniker cab on it. My neighbor that did my outside chores while I recovered, loved the step. So I got a K&M step for his 4430 and his son helped me put it on. He was surprised and went in the house and asked his wife if she could guess what was in his machine shed. He was surprised again, because she already knew about it! He later told me his uncle Darrel loved the steps as well. They are wonderful since I'm getting older, but not any faster than anyone else!

I'd like to see a pic of the (or a ) 4320 with the steps. I could be needing an upgrade in the next few years.
