Neighbor is getting out of the concrete business. I bought one of his transits. It has W.& L.E. Gurley on it. Looks to be a quality piece of equipment. The only other number on it is 471934. I've googled the company but can't find much info on this one. Does anyone have an idea as to the year of it?

No. He bought it at a sale about 30yrs ago and he thinks I bid against him. I think I went and It started higher than I wanted to give. Don't think I made a bid.

I have my great-granddad's Gurley surveying COMPASS. Great tool from the 1870's. Gurley was in Troy, NY and was one of the better makers, according to my dad, when he started surveying in the early 50's. Similar instruments are all over ebay. You might find a manual or unit there for comparison.

My guess would be that your transit is from the 20's to the 40's.

I managed to pick up an old style Gurley tripod at auction once. My GGDad only used a monopole, it was much easier to carry in the woods, but boy is it difficult to sight with. The weird coupling caught my eye even though the auction had no other Gurley parts.

Enjoy your new tool. Lasers and GPS are making transits obsolete. There seem to be alot of them available in the secondary market. But they can still be quite useful. I have one that I used in laying out and digging my basement.
