New tractors

May be off topic but I looked at new tractors today because I woulod love to have 4 wheel drive, cab and air, etc. After checking prices, my old iron and I will remain hot, stuck, and stung by yellow jackets.

I purchased a new CIH Farmall 40 with CVT transmission back in 2011. Has a good 2000lb lift loader, pressurized cab, A/C, heat, 4wd, 1 remote, 40ish HP, 4 cly diesel. I have to say that the CVT is absolutely wonderful, no clutch, no gears, any speed you want forward or reverse. I traded in some older/antique IH tractors and a baler to reduce the final price. Ended up paying $30,000CAD in 2011. It has 700hrs now and has been very useful for snow blowing/clearing, cutting grass/hay, and loader work. Great compact tractor all round. Equivalent price today...? Still enjoy my 1949 Farmall C though.

I have the new holland version with a cvt also. I love it. Sure is nice in the winter to have the heat moving snow.

Yeah, the CVT sure makes a difference, my older tractor was either too fast or way too slow in reverse for snow blowing, Now I can go forward pushing with the loader and reverse blowing snow. And the cab has nice heat or A/C, windshield wipers, and lots of lights too. Luxury tractor all round.

At North 40 they have a bobcat with loader and rops on display. I think it's a 35hp model but don't remember for sure. The rear wheels are barely taller than the fronts on my 300u, and the hood barely comes up to my belly. They have a 20k price tag on it. How can anyone justify spending that much money? A good used 5k utility tractor will get the same jobs done, and you can have lots left over for a canopy over the rops.

Kubota, cab and air with loader, 4 wheel drive . Multiply horsepower times $900 and it gets you a fairly good ballpark price. Just cannot bring myself to pay $60,000 for a new one when my two old ones can get the job done. But it sure would be nice .......

That price is about what I paid for my JD 4052R last year at zero percent interest. When I'm 80 years old Bush hogging at 100 degrees, 100 percent humidity, and 40 mph winds it will be inside an air conditioned cab. Or pushing snow at 0 degrees and in a blizzard it will be in a heated cab. The 3 range hydrostatic transmission works fine and easy. I added a trailer and 6 foot roto tiller. Actually cheaper than what alot of people pay for pickups. Can't see buying a new pickup that is just going to get banged up and treated rough around the farm. After roto tilling the garden area a few times this spring I had a patch of weeds in the corral that needed mowed. I went in with the tiller set a few inches down and got rid of the weeds. Just need to throw out some grass seed now.

wwoodrow, I'm 80 this summer. Eight years ago I bought a new 75 hp tractor with four wheel drive, loader, cab, heat and a/c. It was a zero interest, five years of payments deal. I also bought a used round baler. Now at 80 I'm still cutting, raking, round baling, loading, hauling, etc. My old square baler is sitting in the shed. Of course the tractor is paid for now and I'm hoping to go on with making hay for several more years. Good luck. kelly

Can I ask what kind of round baler you got and how you like it?

flying belgian, I bought a Vermeer 604 K. I think it was made in 1997. It has taught me LOTS, while I have taught it nothing! I've had belts twist, have plugged it, have had the kicker not allow me to remove a bale from the chamber, etc. I like it tho. It makes a good, dense bale and can make up to a six foot one. I like the four foot width for a trailer or to haul. Also the baler isn't too big for my tractor (tractor has enough power to run it) and the bale size is one my tractor can lift, load, etc.
