been assembling my new 24x36 metal building workshop and am considering some type of insulation. Is 1" or 2" styrofoam insulation sheets a good prospect for gluing to the walls and ceiling? Other suggestions? I enjoy the formum and all your expert info.

When they did mine they put roll insulation over the frame before sheeting it - vapor barrier to the interior.

A lot depends on where you live and if you plan to heat it. If you do plan to heat it then go with at least what is said to be used in your area if not more. In my area min is R19 in the ceiling area and r 11 in the walls. I prefer to go with at least half again as much say R30 in the ceiling and R20 in the walls. But that said the first inch or so is what does most of it and any more you add is pure gravy

Funny you should ask... I just came inside from hanging plywood for the ceiling of the "new" 24x18 workshop I'm building inside my pole barn. One wall is shared with the pole barn exterior, and I plan to spray foam on that one (3" thick is what seems to be the recommendation), and will use rolls/batts for the rest (2x6 stud walls).

Would have loved to put in-floor heat in, but that would have required busting up an existing concrete floor and a lot of extra $$$.

Having been an industrial carpenter for a lot of years,I like foam insulation for several reasons.If you are installing it yourself,it's apparent why one would rather use foam,as fibreglass is itchy,irritating stuff.When left exposed,fibreglass is not good.Sprayed on foam is good in that it expands and fills voids that may let air in.You can install sheets of foam,then install wires to hold it in place.---lha

Hey, how much did that building end up costing you with the installation and cement work? I'm thinking about putting one in, and there's alot of variables in price. Not sure where to start.

I have a 30 by 50 with roll insulation and my brother has a similar one with sheet insulation here in MO. My shed is at least 20 degrees cooler in the summer and 20 degrees warmer in the winter.

It was done in pieces with a lot of little extras tossed in as I went so tough to say exactly but a lot more than I initially planned!!

The building is 40x75 with 12' eaves, a 4/12 roof, and it was "cheap" - $22,400 delivered to my site with stamped engineering drawings. I paid the 6 man erection crew $8,500 - it took them almost 2 weeks and they worked their a$$ off 10 hours/day.I purchaased insulated 10x20 and 10x16 doors separately - each has a full view insulated glass panel and they cost me another $3500.Add all that up and you get something in the neighborhood of $35,000.

Then the county went to work on me with permits and foundation requirements - engineered plan and more steel and concrete than they used to bury Jimmy Hoffa. I did it myself with the exception of pouring the concrete - probably another $10K with backhoe rental, cinder block, steel, concrete and labor

So all told probably $50K by the time you add in a 200A electrical service entrance and miscellaneous goodies like door openers, bathroom rough-in, two posyt lift, and a 150K BTU unit heater. That does not include the framing, drywall, and wood floor in Bay 1 for TOOH - I had to bribe her with some floor space to get the OK :roll: I purchased it online from SteelBuilding.com and I can recommend them highly - great service and quick delivery. It's my Garaj Mahal and I love it - clear span steel buildings can't be beat!!!
