does the 273 make a nice tight bale in uniform length or will they make a banana bale like the older balers such as the #68

Our 273 will make a nice tight uniform bale if...It is set up right, the windrows are uniform & the operator knows what he/she is doing. I really like it, we have had very few problems with it.

The 68 isn't a bannana baler if you know how to tweak it along to make nice square bales... You have to be willing to deviate from the normal way of setting bale tension etc.

I have one that makes 38" - 40" bales weighing 60-65lbs that are tight, square, and stay that way.
The 273 is no different, it like the 68 likes a fair sized windrow of consistent material.

your 273 should be an excellent baler if you will set your cranks on the back of your bale chamber equal turns you will have a nice square bale if your bales are too loose crank them down a couple turns if bales are still loose you can add hay shoes inside your bale chamber if bales are still too loose keep cranking her down 2 to 4 turns this is what i do i end up with 65-70 lbs bales this is just something you might try assuming your baler is in good shape they are a very easy baler to work with have a good day in the hayfield

Oh p.s. they don't like baling wet or green hay

I have NH 78 it needs to be fed heavy and use a live PTO so you can slow up in real heavy spots. We put two rows together of heavy hay and it baled them at 60 lbs all day long about 25 ft. between bales. Make sure the stop for the ram is working the spring fell of mine and we creamed two needles. We have the hydraulic bale tension set it at about 100 for 60 lb and 150 for 80 lb bales.

273 balers are low capacity balers. The best I've ever done was 150 bales/hr(verses my big square baler that can do the equivalent of 800/hr!). If they are over fed the bales will have one loose string. They work ok as long as you make good windows and know how to run a baler. For me, with the limited # of idiot blocks I do, a 273 works OK. A hesston baler is superior to all others when it comes to quality bales and capacity. As far as green hay goes, mine doesn't care. It will take hay that won't keep.

We own a 273 baler and it makes good bales and it can go at a fairly quick speed.(4-5mph) and get done 400-500 bales an hour if you want to constantely shift between 4-L and 1-H it also depends which cut your on. In first cut we get about 100 bales/acre and pushing it can get done 2-200 bale loads an hour. We stack all the bales.
As far as constienty goes every bale will be fairly close to one another in length and will always be uniform in terms of banana bales. This is all just my experience with this baler and every baler is different. It just has to be adjusted correctly

500 bales per hour seems like a lot. How heavy are you bales? At 500 bales per hour, it works out to 7.5sec/bale. How many guys on the racks. My 273 doesn't get used much, but the best we have ever done is two 120 bale rack per hour in straw and similar type crops. I don't remember the strokes/minute of a 273, but I beleive it to be fairly low. At 75 strokes/min and 38inch bales that a 4+ inch flake of hay.
