Next noob question...

So I bought a '49 8N that barely ran, PO said it needed carb work and was running on choke. Did a compression check and had nothing on #3. Thanks to the wise and helpful people on this forum it turned out to be a stuck lifter. After days if soaking finally freed it up, doesn't want to start at all now. Figured the next step was rebuilding the leaking carb, and after further investigation he was not only running the wrong plugs but had 2 of the spark plug wires crossed. Fixed everything, still won't start. There is a tiny hole in the bottom of the carb eith what looks like a jet, gas is leaking out like a sieve! Can anyone tell me what's going on with that? Temporarily plugged it so carb would fill with gas but still nothing, not even a fart. So now I have good compression on all 4 cylinders, have spark, should be firing in right order now and still nothing? I'm still suspecting the carb at the moment, cranked and cranked to the point she should have been flooded, pulled a couple of plugs and neither smelled like gas (I've got old Harleus, been through this ritual before). Any ideas??

Check that #1 is on compression when #1 plug fires- your distributor could be 180 degrees off.

Sounds like you have a missing bowl drain!

That's not a jet, that's a drain... your float is stuck open

I don't believe a 49 distributor CAN be 180 out... it indexes into the end of the cam w I'm pretty sure, an offset slot

Not sure what you're calling a 'power valve'

When I replied I figured you were talking about the "sintered strainer lower body drain" in the pic

(quoted from post at 18:10:56 05/13/21) BTW.... fwiw, I bought a new aftermarket carb on amazon for $22 shipped and it runs absolutely perfect

It looks like jet at the bottom of the carb, can't believe if there's more than a quarter inch of gas in the bowl it drains.

Yeah I saw your other post on the carb, have a link? Been dealing with these Chinese knock-offs on my kids' dirt bikes and my quad, might as well just burn your money so I gave up on going that route 🙄

The blue line in your pic, except it's angled the other way. Threaded hole with something that looks like a jet in there, except no way to get it out, no slot or anything on top?

Still don't know what you mean.... is the part you're talking about labeled in the pic?

Making some progress as you started with a tractor that would run only with the choke was pulled out.
Also found out it had a dead cylinder with no compression due to a stuck lifter.
Got that fixed and found out it had the wrong plugs and two spark plug wires crossed up.
Now you have a stuck open float needle and seat to work on. Most likely fouled plugs to go with it.
Strange how you went from an engine that would only run while choked, to one that has a stuck open needle and seat. This tractor is going to keep you busy.

Plugs are not fouled, seems like gas is not getting to them at all, don't think needle is stuck open, ir moves freely when carb is off. Yeah def keeping me busy, and frustrated as well.

Sometimes an old tractor won't start for
us after it's been sitting idle for
years. No matter what we do. So we hook
it to another tractor and pull start it.
Dunno, maybe shocks it in to running....

I think it is a testament to these old machines that they can have so many things wrong and still run! They may not run well but they seem to run! My 8N51 was in a similar condition, and over time, I tackled one thing after another and after each repair the Old Girl ran a little better and started a little easier.

So after looking as some pics of carbs it's pretty obvious I lost that small brass plug in your pic. After digging through some old threads it was mentioned that this plug is actually an adjustment and not just a drain? Can anyone verify? And where in the heck am I going to get another one??

I'll have to verify when I get home, but I've been thinking about this all day. I think I MAY have sorted out another piece of the puzzle. The carb had definitely been messed with before, it had a viton needle. I think whoever did it may have put the choke spring on backwards, and me not thinking about it put it back the same way. I think the spring was holding the choke closed, that has to be bass-ackwards! Like I said I will verify later, but this could be the reason it would only run with the choke "on"! Can someone tell me what that "trap door" does, and if it's supposed to be facing in towards the carb or out? Right now it is facing in.

he 'blue line' reference and the brass screw pictured near the bowl drain is only plugging a drill passage used in manufacturing the carb and there is no reason to ever remove it. You are seeing the main jet via that hole. It is accessed by removing the nozzle at other end of that blue line.

No harm intended you probably all ready know all of this but FHIW
First off if the "trap door" as you put it is facing into the carb, it's " bass-backwards ". It should be facing out to release the pressure if the engine back fires while starting with the choke closed.
Second : IMHO, from the amount of information given, you have a TSX 241-B carb, the attached link may help you verify that ; https://www.carburetion.com/CarbNumber.asp?Number=TSX-142
Third : Carbs, have 2 fuel supply circuits.
One, is low idle, idle screw proportions the gas mixture under slow engine idle, low air flow condition. The choke functions with this circuit by further restricting the air intake to increase the gas portion of the mixture by limiting air intake for starting.
Second, is the power circuit side of the carb which adds additional fuel as engine speed increases. It has 2 main components, the main nozzle and power adjusting needle. If the main nozzle is not clean it will not allow the correct air/fuel mixture to allow the engine to accelerate.
IMHO, from your description, the main nozzle needs to be removed and cleaned. The attached video shows the carb cleaning process, hopefully it will help in getting your tractor to run. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZ7qJobmuHk

The correct choke position:

If it would only run with the choke on that indicates a plugged fuel circuit in the carb. Most likely the idle circuit.

Yeah I know I took that picture as I was taking it apart so I would put it back together correctly 😁
