Finishing up season wrapping up some corn fodder and broke one side of my upper chain where the bar fasten to the chain. Is there a right and wrong way to replace link and shouldn't I replace link at other end also since it's bend pretty bad? Any information is appreciated looks like it could be a mess if chain comes loose.

Had an 847 which is about the same baler. When the chains start breaking new replacement chains are in order soon and they are expensive.

Now to try to answer your question as I understand it. You need to raise the lid until it is open a few inches at the bottom. Run the baler until the broken part is at the opening so you can get to it to work on it. Block the lid open so in won't leak down on you. There is a connecting link somewhere in the chain. Getting the whole chain out and back in is a pain and you would need to refer to a shop manual. Good luck.

Well, I'd go abut it a little different. Raise the chamber and put down the safety blocks. Run the chain around until the link is at a place you can get to it to work on it. Get yourself a come along and take the tension off the chain buy pulling the spring loaded idler/tensioner bar back a little bit. I usually do this with the baler attached to the tractor, and hook one end of the come along to the top link pin. Then secure the chains in place by tying a bar or two with a rope or something. That sucker is heavy, and can unwind on your head if you're not careful. Once I have some slack and everything is secure, I'd replace both sides of the broken link you mentioned.

The other fella is right though, once chains start breaking, they don't stop. Available through a dealer, about $900 total for both sides if I recall.
