NH baler

Hi. I bought a NH 277 at auction, and it looks great, I "spun" it the other day and it seems fine.
Except - it has an "upper" row of pickup teeth above the regular pickup, to help pull the hay in, but it"s been disabled. There is supposed to be two short chains to make it rotate, but the main one is missing, and the other one is stiff & dusty (as if it hadn"t run in a long time). I don"t know what other NH balers had this setup, but I would think it would be better if this upper row of pickup teeth were running.
Anyone have experience with this setup?

lets clearify this alittle. You have your MAIN pickup which brings hay off ground up into the baler. That is working? Now after that the hay goes into some fingers (6) long finger things, that would work back and forth pushing the hay into the bale chamber. those are not working?

I know what your talking about I have a 280 that has the upper set of teeth not all NH baler has them. It would be a good idea to replace the two sets of chains and then time so that the hay is pushed back when the bale chamber is being filled.

It's like Wayne says - ABOVE the main pickup, the one that picks up from the ground, there is 1 row of pickup teeth that hang down from above the main pickup and rotates to, I assume, help pull hay in. Not the sideways feeder mechanism. I don't see this feature on 99% of the other balers out there. I was just wondering if there would be a reason to disabled it, or maybe the chain broke and the previous owner just never fixed it. I've come to find out that NH balers can break something and still bale pretty good!!!

I ran a 277 with the upper row of teeth as well. I honestly didn't see much difference, but if it makes you feel better, replace them and time them. I may be wrong, but I do not think they are imperative! Good luck, Mike
