NH489 Cutter Bar

I'm almost done restoring this old 489. It's coming along real good. My goodness, I've cut out so much rusted metal and replaced it's not even funny.

I'm replacing all the guards, clips, and blades for my 489. I would have ordered a complete bar assembly but the Shipping was out of site.

I have all the blades off the cutting bar. There is about a 45 degree bevel on the back side of the bar where it rides against the guards. Is this worn or is it designed like that. I have two of them the same way and the bevel is so even it doesn't appear to be wear.

Thanks for any insight.

When we rebuilt the cutter bar on our Hesston 1014+2, we ordered the sickle, guards, bolts, and everythign else associated with the sickle from Webb's sickle service, and it was very affordable to have them shipped here instead of going to a dealer and buying through them.

Very knowledgeable folks.

Local NH Dealers are shutting the doors left and right around here. Nobody local anymore.

I hear a new one is coming in soon but it will be awhile.

Is the bar suppose to have a square back or tapered?

If you're talking about the bar that the sections rivet or bolt to, it's supposed to be square, be cheaper and less work to replace the whole sickle, New Holland isn't the only place that has them, I've bought mine at the local feed mill, Farm and Fleet and various other places over the years.
