Bought tractor not running. I have power to the voltage regulator but no fire from from regolator to switch.have adjusted the points on regulator but points will not close.Believe the regulator is shot but wuold like some advise as I have replaced the switch /condensor/ etc. thanks in advance. Rich

The regulator is part of the charging system not the ignition system. If it doesn't have fire is there power getting to the coil? Put in a new set of ignition point and set them at .022. Pull the coil wire and hold it near a ground and crank it over, does it have a blue spark? Just hold the end of the wire and you will have a blue spark.

If you get spark that way, you will also have curly hair!! Make sure that you have juice to the coil, check the points and cap and rotor. Good luck !

You don't even need to crank it. If you have found out there's good voltage from the ignition switch to the coil, just turn on the ignition switch, hold the coil wire close to a ground and push the points open and closed with a screwdriver. No spark? Then just ground the moving part of the points with the screwdriver, holding the screwdriver against the top of the distributor body, or try touching both halves of the points at the same time with the screwdriver blade, kind of rocking it back and forth. If you get spark this way, the points need to be cleaned or replaced (recommended). Use a screwdriver with an insulated handle. The voltage that's pent up in the condenser can make you flinch.Jim

Thanks for info . The wiring on this tractor /hot wire from starter to amp gauge/ white wire from amp gauge to voltage regulator/ blue wire from voltage regulator to ignition. Is this standard wiring for this tractor? The pionts must make contact in order to get fire to the ignition.Made a jumper wire from the white wire to the blue wire @ regulator. Now have fire to ignition and tractor runs fine but the jumper has bypassed the charging system. Need more advise. Thanks Rich

Are you referring to points in the distributor or points in the voltage regulator?

Do you have a 3 terminal or 4 terminal regulator? On a 4 terminal the A (Armature) may be on the under side.

Wiring should be:

Wire from battery side of starter switch to one side of ammeter. Other side of ammeter to BAT terminal on regulator.
ARM (or GEN) on regulator to A (armature) post of generator
F (Field) post on regulator to F on generator

If it is 4 terminal regulator it will also have an L terminal (Load). This goes to input of the switch. If 3 terminal regulator (no L) the input to the switch comes from generator side of ammeter.

Try this and see if it gets your ignition side working, then deal with the charging issue.
