No one has any comments on small gravel screen plants. This can not be!
A question was asked 1-11-11 about small gravel screen plants and no one has replied.
Its hard to believe that no one has any experience with a small portable [pull behind a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup] gravel screen plant.

Like a EZ Screen1000 or other similiar small screen plant.
Would appreciate comments on your experience or any comments on the various small screen plants as I am thinking of purchasing one, and would like [greatly appreciate] real world experience comments.

I saw your original comment, but don't have any more experience with them now than then - which is still 0.

Ask your sales guy if he would/could give you any references of past customers - thats what I do occasionally in my work...

I have been told by the guys working in the gravel business that the Simplicity is the cadillac of shaker screens. Those are fixed position screens though.
I have hauled some of the Simplicity screens. Seems to be well built . As for portable sceens I know nothing about them.

i know enuff not to stand under a big one...have never seen a socalled small portable unit.

Bob,

I have no experiance with gravel screens, but I just can't believe that a certain person from Canada doesn't, he has seen everything and done everything else. What gives?????

Been working on equipment, including a few shaker screens, for years but have no experience at all with the small units like your looking for. Portable to me means it can be towed with a road tractor, not a pickup. I can tell you that regardless if what brand you choose, you need to check it out good and insure it is constructed as heavy as possible. I say that because by nature a screen catches hell and if not built heavy it will tear up given half a chance. Too depending on the abrasivness of the material your planning to screen, choose one that has well made, inexpensive ((as possible)) and easily changable screens because if you run enough material they will wear out and require changing. Beyond that all I can tell you is shop around and find one in the size you want, with the features you need, and any other options you like, and go for it....Good luck....

I have seen more then one small home made one but never one like you asked about. Almost bought one many years ago to use on my place but the guy wanted way to much for something that didn't work. I have always wanted one since I have a 1/4 mile or so of creek that has lots of gravel in it.

A tow behind screening plant? A friend of mine has one. He tows it behind a 1 ton truck.

It"s a small unit with a grizzly on top and a small shaker screen right underneath that. Works good for cleaning up small bits of topsoil but you can do that with an excavator.

He had for all of two months and then traded it for an old dumptruck. He said it was waaaaaaay too small to be useful.

I guess if you want to process your material 1 yard at a time it would be suitable but spend a day trying to load a tandem lol.

Good luck man.

I too am like Old . I wanted to see what comments you got because I have over a mile of good creek gravel that would screen out good material. I have all kind of toys, dozers, loader, excvator but have never found a screen I though was a bargain. They just seem to hold their value. I have seen some vidio of round rotary like a big pipe with holes in it that I think would work well for this creek gravel but again have no experience and haven,t found anyone that has. jm.

I have a small EZ Screen (brand). It has a 5.5 hp Honda engine. It's amazing what you can do with it. If there is a lot of clay in the soil it needs to be dry or it bunches up on the screen, I have a 2" screen. I've never done topsoil, but some say they use them for that. I use a T190 Bobcat, but a small excavator or compact tractor would work. It's not a production machine by any means, but you can get some nice gravel out of not so nice gravel and the reject rocks may be able to be used for other things. I would be careful dumping big boulders on the screen as damage could be done. I sort with a grizzly too, so all the dirt I run through the screen has the big boulders out.

I'm a retired welder with a small fab shop. About 10 years ago I built several screeners like you describe for a customer. The screen was about 6x6 hanging on springs powered by a small engine that ran a shaft with a weight welded on one side so it would bounce. The unit was raised onto wheels by built-on trailer jacks for transport. He was not an engineer by any means and I had to retrofit some with gusetts because he didn't design them strong enough. The produt dropped into a 5x8 box with the high side open. They didn't sell good enough to keep building them. I never saw one in operation.
