No Spark - revisited

I am pretty sure I have found the problem, and I'm almost ashamed to have to tell you. But, with all the help and information all of you gave me, I'll have to fess up.

I took the distributor out to install the new points correctly and found it has about a 1/16" play (wobble) in the shaft. This was not apparent when it was in the tractor.

I know. I should have checked this up front, but at the time I wasn't confortable with taking the distributor out.

The cam lobes and flats are also worn more than I thought. Looks like a good enough excuse to me to buy a new distributor.

Thanks again for all your help. I'll let you know how it works out.

Thanks for your reply. a new distributor should last the life of the tractor. Be proud of yourself for finding the problem.

My shaft was worn in a tapered fashion at the top bushing. My buddy using standard bushing stock machined a bushing that took up all of the slop from the shaft.25 cent part saved me big money on a new distributor or a $70 shaft.
