ok I rebuilt my 9N 5 years ago all new everything in motor. Ran great for two years then found that the tsv33 carb had a broken carb float pin holder tried to fix it with jb weld head for 3 years then started flooding out when engine was turn off so i started turning off gas after each use that worked kind of, if I did not turn gas off immediately it would not start back up. So here we are present day snowed heavy over new years went out and started tractor ran fine pulling heavy wet snow most of morning then it started to miss so i pulled it over to the garage to check fuel flow and it was great tried to start it just turn over with no start, that drained the 6 volt battery down cranking it trying to start it ,then i hooked up a jumper cable from my car to the tractor 6 volt battery again just spun the engine with no start.
I then charged the 6 volt and hooked up a spark plug tester to cylinder 4 cranked it over no spark. checked voltage at battery it was 6.5 volts, checked voltage at key 6.5v checked voltage at resistor block it was 5.4v checked at distributor it was 5.1
Went kind of crazed and decided to pull the distributer and points they were warren but looked good should have stopped at resistor but no had to over thing problem.
Just need some help on what to check how to check systematically so in not rebuilding the engine due to some small problem. I have service manual and have run thru the steps but I'm now at a loss of spark (no pun intended).
PS thanks to the members that helped me find a new carb top that problem should go away after I find spark.

Since you had the voltmeter out, you checked voltage at the points when open? Closed?
All the points do is connect ground to the coil to make it fire. So one side of the points is power and the other side is ground.
I had a similar situation once. I didn't have the time to diagnose it, I just ran a nail file (Wife was happy, really she was!) past the points and get it back on the road at that time.
YMMV.

(quoted from post at 10:06:33 01/04/23) I'm inclined to think a wet electrical system.

Times two what John in Mich said. Try spraying some WD-40 on the top of the distributor and the bottom of the coil.

UP Date
Pulled the Distributor (front Mount) New Points, Cap, Rotor, condenser and Dissembled and Cleaned all Distributer internal parts Tested voltage from battery to coil all good now getting a spark plug tester to lite up but wont start it did pop one short pop then nothing so I put on a new resistor under the dash tried it again have spark but no fire. Also checked compression still just like new. Forgot to mention put on a brand new carb that I had from a past project (a 2N that I refurbished and sold) It worked on the 2 N for a day then i took it off and put a rebuilt on the 2 N so I know it worked Still no start Any suggestions or test anyone can think of would be great.

Put the old condenser back in. Now days very common for a new condenser to be bad and if it is you can see spark but not have it long enough or strong enough to run

Rock54 , Your spark plugs could be gas fouled.Get a new set of NGK 3112 plugs and install them ,it you have good spark at the wires it should start.

you need a spark that will jump 1/4" in the open air. if it won't, it won't have the energy to jump the spark plug gap under compression. unless your test light can make such a judgement, get an adjustable gap tester and confirm that the spark can jump a quarter inch.

Took a chance tried old trick I saw on u-tube years ago put in auto lite 216 gaped them 0.020 started right up after a few turns.
But i looked at the red cable on the battery hooked to the positive terminal and it was smoking, That tells me something else is going on any suggestions?

If the battery cable is smoking that says it is either going bad or you have auto type battery cables but a 6 volt system. If 6 volt you need 0 or 00 size battery cables

Most any auto parts store has them but you need to put the ends on the cables your self. I have done that many times over the years. I buy mine from O'Reilly's

Setting the plug gap at .020 is a band aid for probably a weak spark caused by the wrong gauge battery cables in your case. I'm assuming that because you asked where to get the large ones. Don't forget to re-gap the plugs to .025.

Rock 54,The reason it started is not because you set the gap to .020 ,it is because you put in new non fouled plugs.I would have put a set of NGK3112 plugs as they are better plugs.Replace the battery cables with 00 or at least 0 cables a must for 6 volt use.

All the comments were great, Just shows the knowledge tucked away in this group.
I found a 4 gauge cable in my old tractor box put it on and it turned over the motor great, I put on the carb and it started up real quick. I'm trying to get the carb set right the motor dies when I back the throttle off but that another thread. I will regap the plugs when I get all the adjustments working to optimum performance.
Thank You All for your help Keep up the good work there are a lot of novices like me out there that need your Knowledge and Help.

s 00 required on both the red and black cables?
