MTD/Troy Bilt 16hp tractor with"pedal-drive"automatic.Tractor runs/drives well, but has an almost hydraulic type whine at all speeds.First one of these I've had,is noise"normal"or indicative of TA problems?Appears to be pretty much a "normal" MTD fwd/rev aluminum TA.

If it is a hydrostat, that is normall, if it is an auto drive, it has two drive belts, has a sliding variator under tractor, with aidler pullies, and they all have bearings that can growl. If you have a lever between your legs for forward/backward, and a speed change lever on fender, it has a belt driven variator, take off that cover, you can see belts and idlers there

Typical of MTD TA's is if it only makes noise when driving the input shaft bearings have failed and caused the input shaft bevel gear to mis-align with the driveshaft bevel gears thus wearing them as well.

Also, The driveshaft bushings will wear and cause a mis-alignment of the bevel gears to the pinion gear and cause noise.

In either case the TA needs to come out and opened for inspection and all worn parts replaced.
