Noisy Tranny

I recently bought a 960 Ford 5 speed live pto. The tractor has been setting up for quite some time. I have issues I am dealing with of which I expected.
My question is to anyone who may have one of these tractors. The transmission sounds like an old 4 wheel drive truck in granny gear especially in reverse.
I have an 51 model 8N and it does not do this. Is this normal? All fluids have been changed.

Don't know why yours is make odd noises. Mine doesn't. Hope someone will come along and help.

I have 850, reverse whines also and I know two others with 800 and 900's and they do the same thing.

Reverse idler gear will make clunking sound or rattle. Its the round cover on trans side. Has bushing in gear.

My 63 4000 does not whine - Could it be the lubricant is too thin?

Remove the reverse gear trunion and inspect the gear, shaft and bushing.

A high percentage of 5 speeds will have some degree of whine.

It could be just your rearend gears whining from turning the other way.

Thanks to all who replied. Rear end has 85 -90 wt. Just put in 85-140 in transmission to see if it would quite it.

I have a 860 Ford live Pto tractor. I am replacing clutch and transmission input seals. Seal busted and flooded clutch with transmission oil. I am replacing a cracked input seal retainer.
The problem I have is with bearing retainer behind the input seal retainer. I broke its gasket and I cannot get bearing retainer to come out. The only thing I can think of is to clean metal on housing and bearing retainer while it is still hooked up and put Black RTV gasket maker behind it. I have about one half inch clearance.
Do any of you have any ideas?

BR860, it sounds like you need to go into the transmission.

I have an old 4000 4 cylinder. It was quiet. I changed all the fluids, put the utf tractor supply in, now it whines.
Try thicker fluid.
