have a whirlpool wash machine, when it goes to the spin cycle, it does not get all the water out of the drum. clothes come out soggy wet. bad pump? timer issue? it does spin when on the cycle. could there be debris clogging up somewhere?

I am thinking along the lines of SouNdguy below. Verify that the pump working as it should? Longer I hang around on this rock the more things I see, but both times we had washing machine failures it was pump related. One time had symptoms similar to yours and must have had something get into the pump that broke up the impeller. Would still pump, but not very well. Other time actually had a flood and a sock had somehow gotten over into the tub and been sucked into the pump jamming it up.

Wife wants new machines for asthetic reasons, but these were wedding presents ~25 years ago and I can probably keep them running at least another 10.

Top load or front load? If it's a top load i'd suspect a worn pump. My daughter had a front load, the bearing on the drum and motor went bad, wouldn't let it spin fast enough.

i think it does, but i will have to check to be sure, it is a top loader, its about 4 years old.

My two year old Kenmore started doing the same thing this past weekend.

I've not yet taken the time to diagnose it but have determined that the washer spins and pumps out normally but turns on the rinse water for about 30 seconds at the tnd of the spin cycle thoroughly soaking the just spinned clothes.

Annoying to say the least.

There is a hose that goes from the drum to a water pump. Perhaps it is plugged enough that it doesn't get all the water out before the pump stops.

Before I would tear into it I would look for a obstruction in hose.We had a dime get caught in hose and did same thing. I got chewed by wife for not getting all the change out of my pocket.

Like Kirk I had a sock get into the hose and restrict flow to the pump about 18 years ago (GE washer). This last summer the pump in my Ammana died, it's plastic and the impellor stripped out so the motor couldn't spin it, I thought it was the belt at first but taking it apart to fix the belt I figured out the pump was MIA. Belt was worn and glazed replaced belt & pump hasn't worked that good in years and it's been fine for 4 months

ad one of those little string-of-beads key chains get thru inner tub & all the way into pump & locked it up.

bet you're missing a sock.......

On the washing machine at my old house, there was a plastic tube (approx 5/16") that connected the outer drum to a pressure switch. Some debris got in the hose and had it plugged up not letting the washer know it had sucked out all of the water. I ended up replacing the entire hose for a couple bucks and fixed the problem.

newer whirlpool ,i would say pump. Older (as in really old) whirlpool may be pump or pin trap. Most washing machine timers just run continuosly making the spin/drain cycle a set time. If they dont empty water out its nearly always the pump or a restriction in one of the hoses. The old whirlpool /kenmores we all grew up with very often had a trap on them also that would catch stuff that would plug or destroy the pump but I dont recall if the newer ones do. Good thing is they are not real hard to change on the newer ones. Most often there are two clips on back of washer that you unlatch and the whole front/top of washer tilts forward. Pump just unclips from motor. Used to sell them a hundred years ago when I was dumb enough to go into the appliance buisness. Didnt take me too long to figure out sears was better at selling washing machines than I was!LOL

Well, it"s almost unanimous for a flow restriction or pump issue (kind of similar diagnosis"). That probably makes it certain to be something else. Let us know the result.
