I have a 220 line from my electrcal panel which comes off from a 220 v 20 amp breaker that goes to my lathe which also has another 20 amp breaker. can I come off from the second breaker supply and put another 220 v 20 amp breaker for something else 220 v.Will it be safe, and legal? Would it be better to go all the way back to the main panel and pull another line? Thanks Stan

I am not an expert but I have wired in my whole house and garage, 7 years ago. The way it is done is a dedicated appliance (or load) needs its own breaker. A 220VAC breaker is a double pole breaker too, which is to be right inside the service panel.

(quoted from post at 17:58:04 08/20/07) That is kind of what I thought someone would say. Thanks Stan

However - if you're out in the barn, and you just want it to work, you can extend the existing line and get power. A few things will determine if you get enough. Like how many amps will the machine you want to run draw? And what size wire are you running & how far(=amperage loss). And most importantly will more than one of the machines plugged into this line run at the same time?

At no time will both machines be operational at the same time, but if they were wouldn't the cb trip from excess amps? Stan

I'm thinking a downrange breaker is supposed to be smaller than the one upwards from it?

You really shouldn't have 2-3 20 amp breakers coming off a main 20 amp breaker. When one trips, you won't know which end went.

But, if you only use one machine at a time,it will function alright. A bit confusing. But, workable. Probably not pass inspection.

You probably should have a 40 amp or 60 amp feeding the line, with the line sized for that amps, and then pull 20 amp breakers off of that for each use. That would be more to code.

Take the breaker at the machine out and put a plug there.
If the other machine that your wanting to run is close unplug the lathe and plug the other machine in.
I wouldnt run them both at the same time and that will ensure that.
Other wise drop another line out of the main if you have 2 open slots
