O/T Ballistic Bullets

Next weekend starts the gun deer season here in Wisconsin. I usually just get normal bullets for my 270, but this year I decided to get ones with balistic tips. The kind that I got are called Winchester Short Magnum, 140 grained boned. I have heard that if the bullet were to even hit a twig, it would explode. Is this true? I can't hardly beleive that it is, but you never know. I was also wondering if the short magnum was a bullet that couldn't travel as far. Why is it short, and why is it magnum. Its overall length is about 31/2 inches compared to normal ones that are about 4 inches. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

THE WINCHESTER SHORT MAGNUM WILL NOT WORK IN YOUR RIFLE!!! do not even try to fire one in your rifle unless you have an ambulance standing by. that is an entirely different cartridge with more power than your barrel or action can handle. that said the cartridges you bought should not even be able to fit into your chamber but if it does fit and you were to fire the gun it would most likely result in the gun blowing up in your face.

Handyman is right {{{{{DO NOT USE}}}}}shot mags totally different shell as to the ballistic tip that's all i have used for as long as they have been made i hunt brush and they work fine. NOW not to pis- you off but you better learn more about your gun before you kill yourself or the guy standing next to you if you shoot them short mags your breach could or will explode if you have a win 270 use only shells for a 270

On the top of the bullet it says 270 WSM(Winshester short magnum) I they arent for a 270 rifle, what are they for? If they are insafe, what kind of balistic tip bullet should I get?

I have reloaded rifle and handgun bullets for many years. The replies made in response to your question are correct. I do not believe the bullets will fit in your gun, do to the larger size of the cases. However, if the bullets fit "DO NOT FIRE THESE BULLETS IN YOUR GUN". The pressure from these bullets will most likely damage your gun or kill you. The bullets you purchased are for a gun designed to work at much higher pressures than your gun was built to handle. The ballistic tip bullets were originally designed by Nosler. There have been several copies of these bullets over the years due to the success these bullets develop on deer size game. I have personally taken and reloaded for people who have shot deer with these bullets. The success rate for a ballistic tip design bullet is very high. Most of my deer hunting reloads have been for a .308 size bullet. A 270 Win. is a good round offering a fairly flat shooting design. Make sure the bullets you buy for your "guns" match the info on the barrel of your gun.

Win. Short Mag will not work in your normal 270. 270 Win and 270 WSM are not the same thing. While I am sure the lawyers made sure the WSM can not be fired in a old 270 don't try it. Rapid come a part could happen.
You got a box of shells, now go out a buy a gun that they were made for.

The short magnum is for a short action gun designed for higher pressures. the diameter of the case should be larger than the 270 win cartridge. your gun would be a long action if indead it is a 270 win. the 270 WSM should not fit your chamber.

Remington will be happy to sell you a model 700 that's chambered for that round. Get on their website. Lots of places in Wisconsin to buy good rifles. Mills Fleet farm is probably best for price but you'll have to order it. Midwestern Shooters Supply would be my second choice.

Waterloo are these like the standard Nosler bullets with the two compartments? Reason I ask is EVERY bullet is ballistic, no bullets I've seen or heard of have their own propulsion.

Don't want to slam you Dalton; but, from your questions it is obvious that you need some serious training before hunting. Sounds like you have calibers all mixed up. Also, is you change cartridges you must go to firing range and re-sight in your rifle, as point of impact may change with any new bullet load/weight, etc. Tom

The 270 has been a good deer rifle for many years.Get the right cartriges for your gun from a gun shop not from a mall store.New calibers are introduced every year.THis is done to get you to buy a new gun.Your lack of basic knowledge worries me.Faster and fancy bullets are not the answer.Proper bullet placement will get the deer.My grandson just lost a deer with a 300WSM.Last year his 270 dropped the deer on the spot.

I have a 270 and use the Hornaday Light Magnum with Ballistic tip. The light magnum from hornaday and the WSM you bought are totally different as others have said.

The hornaday's give me about 1 inch accuracy(100 yards) with 3100 fps. (Not that I could probably tell the differnce between 3100 and 2800 fps)...

I love them and put them in a winchester 270 that I bought at Wal mart.....Works great for me...

Dave, Nosler has been making this bullet for quite a few years now. I used them almost exclusively for varmint hunting. I started using the .308 calibre Ballistic tips for deer hunting around 15 or 16 years ago. Great bullet for thin skin game animals, such as deer.

Man I don't know, some of the info and original post really scares me. No disrepect intended, but sure glad some individuals are not hunting in my neck of the woods.

Dalton, my advice for you is to do some research on your particular rifle and ammo. Learn all you can...Buy,beg or borrow a reloading manual. could save your health or more important save your LIFE, and or someone elses.
