O/T-GE washing machine

My neice has a GE washing machine that the timer doesn't work properly, her husband is currently in Iraq . Is there somewhere online where I can get a new or good used timer? I will get model# tomorrow. Thanks,. Mark..

Most of the time if the timer has gone bad its cheaper to replace the machine then it is to fix it. Last one I had that happen to it cost about $50 less then a new machine would cost

Do a search for GE wash machine parts, try a couple search engines you should be able to find something. try a used appliance dealer near you.
Go to your local trash transfer sta. or Dump.
You might get lucky, they usually have alot of white appliances.

The old GE's were easy to work on and were supported by a series of books that made it easy to diagnose and fix problems. Also, the old timers had replacable switches that were inexpensive modules that anyone could replace.

But I haven't worked on a GE washer for 15 years or so, and so I don't know how they might be now. You might want to get the model and serial number and inquire about the washer in question--it might be easier to fix than you think.

Some appliance repair places have boneyards and might be willing to get you the part you need, or even allow you to remove it yourself.

If the timer motor goes through cycles, but not the appropriate things happen, it is probably the switch contacts. You might try cleaning the contacts to get it working. But if the timer has the replacable switches, a much better and long lasting repair is to replace the offending switch(s).

If the timer doesn't operate, and is getting electricity, it may need to be replaced. I think I would remove it and have a pro bench test it, since a new timer might cost more (and maybe much more) than a good, working second hand washer from a garage sale.

Good luck, I kept my old GE washer and dryer working for about 30 years with a little tinkering and a few parts. They sure didn't owe me anything when I gave them to one of my sons to have at college. I got the set used in 1975. Neat Harvest Gold! When we built the new house, my wife insisted that we get all new appliances, or we would probably still be using them.

Don't know it but GE might have a help line, that will diagnose the problem. Got to a point with my refrigerator that I called GE service. They were excellent but too expensive. If it still is in operation, the help line, would go through the problem step by step, and provide answers. Good Luck. Had a GE, still got my mothers Maytag from 92 with no problems at all. But Maytag went down the drain with quality. If I needed a new one might look at Whirlpool.

Thats my understand also. That when the timer on a newer washer goes out you buy a new washer.

Yep, we have a guy in the area that repairs washers driers etc and when he get one with a bad timer he parts it out because it cost to much to replace the timer

I also suggest Repair Clinic for appliance parts. They are well stocked and can give you advice.

For a used one you can check the local appliance stores and ask who gets the old ones that they take for disposal. In this area there are a few guys that strip them for the material values and you can get parts for next to nothing.

Yes, it may be easier to trash the unit but I am a believer of fixing where it makes sense. Only you can decide the correct approach by weighing the cost factors. When I do a fix like this I figure my time as free. If I wasn't doing something productive I would be watching TV and adding no value at all.
