O/T Hughes net

I"ve been toyin around with the idea of going to hughes net. I gotta get rid of this P.O.S. AOL dial up.

Does anyone here have it? How is hughes net? It"s a little pricy, but is it worth it? The only time I really go on is for the tractor stuff, but the wife uses it alot. This dial up is just way too slow and unreliable, it just shuts off whenever it wants. Thanks, Doug

Farmall & TomTex; I have been on Wildblue since 4/20 this year. All In all its been pretty good. There are times when it runs slow without any apparent reason, and its like satellite TV, heavy clouds or rain and you're out of business for a while. For about a two week period my email wouldn't work very good from about 8pm to 10:30pm. Now its just like clockwork. Also my installer left a certificate that was worth $10 a month for the first 10 months. Over all I've been satisfied with it. LE

Been with Hughes for about three years now. My only other choice was VERY slow dial-up. Like stated by Larry, the weather can mess with it, but not as often as I used to loose connection on dial-up. Downloads are pretty fast. Over all, I would give it an 8 out of 10.

It is expensive to have installed, and the speed can vary depending on the time of the day, but overall HughesNet is way better than dial-up.

I know four persons in this area that have Hughes.net. Some have had a few minor problems but would never go back to dial-up.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna check out Wildblue. The weather messing with hughes net wouldn't bother me too much cause I have direct tv and am used to it. Plus I like to unplug everything in a storm anyway. Thanks for your input. Doug

I just checked out Wildblue. I think I'll go with them. There is a dealer-installer about 5 miles from here, and I've never heard of it. Thanks, Doug

Have you checked out wireless microwave internet? I installed it in February and went from 20 kps to 600 kps download. Equipment and installation was free and with microwave tv, the internet is $35.00 per month.

Check out the link and insert your state to find coverage maps... Gene

Doug,
We have been with Hughesnet for about four months. We had several other dialup providers including People PC just prior to our switch to Hughes. Whether it was the 19 to, on a "good" day, 21.6 kbps or the "bilingual" but uninteligable customer assistance from Pakistan(?) is a tossup but we haven"t looked back at dial up.
True blue wasn"t available in our area. Heavy dust from windstorms, smog and rain has affected it but not wiped out our Dirtect TV that is right next to it. Had some bad luck for the last month until we figured out that the installer hadn"t properly tightened the mounting bolts. Got up on the roof last night and lucked in to redirecting and tightening things. Now it works the best it ever has and that is GREAT. I almost think that it never was completely bore sighted on the satellite.
We have the no frills plan that is still a lot more expensive than most dial ups but life is too short to ever return to the phone lines.
Good luck on your high speed You"ll love it.
Best Regards Don

That microwave sounds interesting. I have STARBAND and neighbor down the road has HUGHES.
I see no real advantage one over the other and Hughes was more expensive to install.

Both are slow on VPN connections and I have had firewalls opened up to permit greater access and still slower than promised.

I am watching this thread to get a consensus as I want to drop STARBAND. AllenNE runs STARBAND and seems to do alright with it. Mu uploads take FOREVER. . . .

I have DIRECTV AND hughes nrt. I got the DW/HN7000 system. It is super fast, custmer servise is a little hard to understand due to over seas cumster servise, but they will work with you till the cows come home. Even on things they don't have to help you with. I pay the 69.99 month and that is there bussiness package. we get 5 email and 1.5 mb servise. I used to run my phone off it to but our cell phones are enough so we dumped the vonage. I got the sat dish locked on the sattlite signal perfect. only in the worst and talles thunder storms does it go out and when it does its just temp. Now directv I just love.... i'm on there "a" list and my bill is around 160 month but they give my a 20 dollar credit every month so my bill is around 140. I get every channel that i can get in my aera. I am grandfatherd in on reciving out of market locals on both standard def and high def. It is nice to have the west cost feeds when you have breaking news or other stupid things when your favorite show is on you can get it 2 hours later on the west coast la feeds. Also i can take my directv and ultimate tv with me. And if i travel out of the "SPOT BEAM" for my local chanels i can still watch my favorite network shows on the WEST COAST FEEDS out of L.A.. I rate directv A 12 out of a scale of 1-10. They have never ever done me wrong. I have the 5LNB dish and can get over 2000 channels if they want to send it to my aera. Lots of them channels are "SPOT BEAM" locals and that takes up alot of beam with. DIRECTV will be the FIRST to have a totaly all HD ready of any provider out there. CABLE SUCKS!!!! I live in the country and even if cable was in my aera i would cut the cable to my house as there servise sucks and they have limited channels and unreliable. When the trade towers were hit on sept 11th it was the people with SAT dishes that kept there tv. All the communications were on the top of the WTC and went down after the planes crashed. Dish network IMEADILTY RESTORED LOCAL TV SERVISE to there cable compettitors. I just like that i can take my tv with me any where in north america. I also like sat radieo.
