O/T Odd electric problem

Went to wash my hands today and no water. I figure the points on the pressure switch needed to be cleaned again, but that wasn't it. Light was also off in the well house so replaced the bulb. Turn on the well breakers and bulb would glow but not like it should have. Long story short is a splice at the weather head was bad so I was only getting half the 220 I should have got. The splice both.nut was broken so to fix the problem till Monday I just clamped a pair of vise grip onto it. Hope doing that works till I can get the part I need. Oh well never get bored with things like that happening

hi old i have a good water problem story for you.like yourself i turned on the water and nothing i know its the points on the pressure switch because i clean them about once every other week or so.this time i said no more went down to the hardware got a new one put it on still nothing. i have spring water its about 100yds from the house have a 1000 gal holding tank. i went down raises the lid roof on the holding tank and i was shocked its empty.it never goes empty it is always running out the overflow.where the watercomes out of the hillside is a small holding tank about 16in x 16in 16in high with a black plastic hose connected toward the top this feeds the large water holding tank.when i took this plastic pipe off where it connects to the large holding tank there was a water snake he got inside the small holding tank went down the 1in black plastic pipe toward the holding tank and where it connects to the holding tank it reduces down to 3/4 in and thats as far as he could go the snake was dead so we didnt drink the water for about a month after that

are you saying you put a metal vise grips on an energized wire ? bill m.

No I had the power off at the pole breaker before I did the vise grips then turned it all back on

sounds like a temporary fix and I am sure you took precautions before leaving it that way

So what do you want him and his family to do untill he can get parts in town be without water?? Might be unsafe if there was a chance someone else might mess with it, but as Old is a long ways from anyone else, should be an OK emergency fix..

Its not the best way to do it but its that or not have power to key things like the well and all the out buildings. Plus its on the roof of the well house which is about 10 foot up so if some one gets up there in the first place they should not be there any how

Not many things I can do to make it safe but since the well house roof is about 10 foot high I don't think some one will be climbing up there. Plus since I live so far out there shouldn't even be any body around that well house other then me and my familty

While you are in town getting the repair parts, buy some copper split bolts. They make emergency repairs easier and safer. Rick

OLD... just go get two buckets and head down to the creek! Oh don't forget you want a 6 ft. pole so you can put each bucket of water on end an balance it across shoulders! Reason for all this with pole. Your dang arms are long enogh and no since carrying buckets just in your hand. Will stretch them arms way down from all the weight and your dang ole knuckles with be be dragen the ground!
So be safe by far.

Thats what went bad on me one of those split bolts, but they have to be aluimiun not copper because of the type of wire it is

Wiring does fail. That's another reason why double ended mail plugs for connecting generators. And using ground wires as tinkerer neutrals is so dangerous.

You did just fine, up till a few years ago there were NUMEROUS farm sites that had all bare wires going from poles to buildings. I have a few times just put a load on a hot wire and close my eyes and welded the wires so to speak. It will get ya a goin till better weather conditions get there once in a while. A few hot sparks can wake you up, and ya have a deer in the headlights look on you face I suppose.
Bottom line is we are pretty helpless without our electricity.

We haven't had many bad nuterals for some time now it seems. Years ago when they were trying to mix alumn and copper in the early days, troubles was as often as cutting the toe nails it seemes.
