O/T Preen weed control

I've been using Preen with pretty good results, but the price tag is killing me. The main ingredient is corn gluten. Could I just use this instead< possibly at a higher rate? Gluten is much cheaper. Is there any other things that can do the job in the veggie garden? Mike

Not familar with this product, but in itself corn gluten is not a herbicide; it is a filler to meter the dose of the active ingredient, which is the toxic element doing the killing.

All things are toxic, just depends on the dose.

Like the others said. What you need to look for is the active ingredient on the label. Corn Gluten should be listed as a inactive ingredient and won't do a thing to the weeds except make them smell funny.

Yes Preen is spendy much more than the sum of it's parts.

Triflurian is the active ingredient but it needs to be applied at a proper rate which is about a quart to the acre (an acre is 43560 sq ft). You should be able to get it as Treflan or tri-4 at a local elevator or someplace like that. If memory serves me it isn't a restricted chemical so you should be able to purchase it without a license. Smallest container it will come in is a 2.5 gal jug of concentrate which will last you for quite a while unless you need to treat multiple acres. Don't overapply unless you don't want grass to grow for 10 to 20 years.

Treflan will work but be careful. Don't apply it to the area where you are growing corn and anything else related to the controlled weeds listed on the label.

AND IF YOU THINK SOME IS GOOD MORE WILL BE BETTER DON'T EXPECT A CONTROLED PLANT TO GROW NEXT YEAR. That Qt to the acre is all you should apply for the year.

GLUTEN can be effective as it kills the germination not placed too deep. Local guy expert on gardens recomends it just raked into the soil but after your seed has germinated. Write the IOWA EXTENSION SERVICE in AMES,IOWA as they have done extensive tests. Well worth looking into as the product leaves no residual effects later on.
