O/T printer problems

My printer came up with a color ink needs changing error. I took my cartridge and had it refilled. This is the third time I have had it filled. The other two times I had the color filled the printer worked good. Now after just having it filled it still has the color cartridge need chang. Do the cartridges go bad after a few fills? Stan

Yes. I had the same problem with refilled cartridges. They work for awhile but they go bad eventually.

Some printers need to be "tricked" into thinking a new cartrdge has been installed... they keep sort of a serial number of each cartridge in memory just to make it miserable for you to save money by refilling a nd re-suing the same cartridge.

I THINK on some printers, you can install a spare cartridge, use that up, then try the refilled cartridge again, and the printer will have forgotten about it, and "see" it as a new cartridge.

DON'T knw if that will work for you, though!

You might try "GOOGLING" the make and model of your printer, and adding something like "reset print cartridge".

Yup, you were lucky to get 2 refills out of it. They just weren't designed to last indefinitely. Not sure what gives out on them. Never been inclined to take one apart

The other problem with refilling them is that sometimes the refill ink isn't the same type as the original ink. I have seen it where it slowly clogs up the jets on the cartridge.

With cartridges that have the print head built in (HP), they aren't made to last a long time. They only want it too last the initial time, but obviously it worked out a little better for you.

Some printers do have memories to make it so it won't work with refilled ones (since the cartridges are numbered) and I haven't had the oppotunity to figure a way around it.

Here is a scary thought- In 2003 (I think) HP made 50% of their profit from their ink sales and that only accounted for about 10% of their total sales.

The Data Products cartridges available at Costco internet sales are lower cost than the refills and they are new cartridges. You just can't get one right away from the corner store. They usually show up in two to three days after order.

Many cartridges are "dated" now. After a certain calendar date (read from your computer), they will no longer work, refilled or not. Try backdating your computer 1 year. I"ve done it with a printer I seldom use, and it works fine. If not, try fixyourownprinter.com. It"s a very helpful site.

Some of the cartridges/tanks have chips in them taht Fail upon empty. and will not be able to be refilled. I hate few things, but that is one. JimN
