Can whole oats(combine run)be fed to horses

Been doing it 30 years and haven't had one with problems yet. Also barley, wheat and rye.

Say, I have about 30 bushels of rye left in the gravity box from fall seding, is it ok to mix it in with my calves grower feed? 200#er's. How much could I mix in?

The oats a great feed

Dave you can feed the rye to the calve has a neighbor that does that I think he just feeds it like outs up to about 50% of the grain ration I would just mix in a little as you fed them.

If that rye seed has been treated and has a dye on it then NO! other wise just fine.

Horses (more-so than cattle) aren't particularly "efficient" digesters. If you are feeding whole oats, you should expect to see grain passing through the horse.

The animal will utilize more of the feed value from the grain if you can crack / roll / crimp / grind the grain first. The processing opens the hull to allow digestive juices at the "meat" of the grain and increases the surface area of the grain. More surface area = better nutrient absorption.

Horses have eaten whole oats forever. Dad always said that whole oats could be feed to cattle up to 6 mo of age. But I feed whole corn to adult cows and they don't pass enough to pay to grind it.

We feed whole oats to show cattle until we are done with them usually about 18 to 24 months old they dont pass that much oats will pass more cracked corn than oats.

Well, we suppliment our sheep, goats and llamas rations with whole oats right off"n the combine (or thrasher). They do well on them, don"t see why it would hurt horses, in moderation. farmers been feeding horses oats for a long time. I would suggest moderation, as too rich a diet can bring on colic in horses.
