Off road Diesel ?

I just just bought enough diesel to fill my Backhoe, two tractors and a RTV Kubota. The diesel was over $4.00 a gallon. WHY!! When I was a young man, gasoline was 32 cents and diesel was 18 cents. Why has the price of diesel passed gasoline?

I heard that because of the new standards that diesel has to meet (low sulfer)it meets Europian standards so they are importing it.

Ours is cheaper than theirs. So we now have less.

Good awnsrew Allan, I agree 100%. They doit because they can, and this time of year especily, people have to buy it.

I don't know where the prices come from - but I have noticed this.

When the EPA mandates came into effect for ultra-low suflur diesel fuel - the estimated extra cost was predicted to be 10 cents per gallon - and the new diesel would have 3-5% less BTU energy and subsequent less miles-per-gallon. That should have no effect on heating oil since it is still high-sulfur. Off-road - as of this year - is now medium sulfur - but not ultra-low. Right now - heating oil (old fashioned high-sulfur diesel) is over $4 per gallon - i.e. more then the price of reg. gas. So, there's some BS going on.

I don't believe for a minute that somehow, just because we are members of the United States - we are entitled to cheap fuel so we can keep on wasting it. But . . . regardless of the market price of crude - diesel should be lower than gas - just as it is in most of Europe and Asia.

Here in New York - the first time I saw diesel prices get higher than reg. gasoline - it was attributed to hurricane Katrina. The story was . . . diesel from all over the U.S. was being diverted to Louisiana to run huge water pumps day and night. Seems those pumps ought to be done by now?

Considering this country (i.e. the U.S.) has done nothing to look ahead and have an infrastructure that makes use of more rail and water shipping - and relies on over- the-road trucking instead - diesel prices effect everyone on all they buy. Seems just for that reason alone - the matter needs some looking into.

How much did everything else cost and what were wages when you were a young man?
It's been a long time since nickel chocolate bars and 5 cent cokes too. I don't see anybody complaining about the price of chocolate, pop, bottled water or booze.

So far as ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel running the price up, I guess some have forgotten that before the President signed ultra-low sulfur diesel approval the price of diesel had already gone higher than gasoline back then. Fuel prices took off like a rocket when our VP had a secret meeting with the top 6 oil executives.

We all can live just fine without chocolate, pop, bottled water or booze. When I was in high school, I could hire out to neighbors and earn $1.25 per hour. Gasoline was priced at 25 cents per gallon. Lots of folks today earn no more than $8 to $10 per hour, but a gallon of gasoline will cost nearly $4. That is just a little bit out of balance, wouldn't you say?

I don't know why diesel is more than gas now perhaps over time the demand for diesel worldwide has outpaced the demand for gas. Anyway, I believe one reason both are so high now is the dollar isn't worth as much compared to other currency as it once was. Since it isn't worth as much countries supplying us oil want more dollars for it. Perhaps it will get better with the new president. No matter who is elected the pressure is on to reduce gas prices and stop inflation. Then again perhaps it will just keep getting worse--maybe we should buy stock in oil companies. The real estate stock in my 401K has really taken a hit.

I can’t sit here and allow this to happen any longer; it’s been fun for 10 years or more, but I’m TELLING!! Within about 2 weeks of posting on YT, most folks realize that there is something going which they can't figure out; on the other hand, there are a few long-time posters who don’t have a clue. There is, of course, a forum BEHIND THE FORUM; to be a member, you have to be invited; most members are either independently wealthy or at least, VERY COMFORTABLE. Think about all the folks with many, many tractors, or the ones who spend countless hours on YT; they (we) couldn't do that if we actually worked for a living. Most of the posts on the REAL forum are making fun of the posts on this, the public one. If you’ve never been invited to join, then you’re not recognized as being ‘our kind’. I can’t really empathize with anyone who actually works for a living, but it must be bad..........you realize we don’t pump our own fuel and our accountant pays the bills when they come in (at least, I think he does; somebody does). If you look at the ‘$200 a barrel’ thread below, there are only 5 or 6 posters who are not a MEMBER of the REAL forum; it should be obvious who is who........I’ll probably get kicked off the “REAL” forum for telling, but it’s not fun to see people hurting.

I think the two biggest reasons are 1) Diesel is more popular in europe so the price goes up, 2) trucking companies, shipping companies, airines and such can charge a fuel surcharge. We called to have topsoil delivered and they told us there was a $7 fuel surcharge to deliver it three miles!

Going to have to earn more than $8-10 per hour then.
Ever wonder what it's like to make more than $40+ and hour? And see how much of the income goes in tax to carry those low income earners who are getting the tax free ride. And free government services that I pay for in either cash or employee benefits?
Gasoline maybe up. How about electronics and other goods that are better and cheaper now than 10.20,30 years ago? Computers, calculators to name just a couple.

when you refine a barrel of oil, it doesn't all convert to gasoline because it is a mixture of all sorts of different hydrocarbon compounds. You get a certain amount of gasoline, so much diesel, some asphalt, some petroleum coke, etc, depending on the composition of that particular oil. Only about half of the oil, at best, is converted to gasoline, the rest is lower value products. Gasoline is the highest valued component, and the refineries are set up to try to get the most gasoline out of a barrel of oil.
There has been a lot of technological advances since the 60's, particular in the area of catalytic crackers, that allow refineries to get more gasoline out of a barrel of oil. So there's less diesel left over, and that's one reason why diesl prices are now higher than gasoline.

Funny thing is, gas has gone up in Canada and Europe quite a bit, too.

Figures I've heard on another board is pushing $5/gallon in Alberta, and $8/gallon in the U.K. which is in line with how much more expensive it was then the U.S.

If this is all about a weak dollar, you should've seen Canada and Europe become closer in price to the U.S., not stay more expensive in the old ratio.

So, you are saying that if a person cannot earn $40 per hour, then he/she should just refuse to work? Who then will serve you your food at a restaurant? Who will wait on you at the parts counter when your tractor is broke down? Who will change the oil on your car? Who will fix your flat tires? Who will teach your children in school?

buickanddeere--I don't think you understand my question. I am NOT COMPLAINING about the cost of anything, I asked why diesel was higher priced then gasoline. I think Dan in Houston has a pretty good explination. I may not agree, but I will have to live with it!

Computers used to come with lifetime support and were manufatured in the U.S. Then everyone wanted chaeper computers. Now they are manufactured in Asia and you pay extra for service and support. Yup that was a great trade.

I think since where its at,that he is trying to say that the forum is on the modern view.Since Im from the South and work for a living these Northerers think its funny because I have a different opinion. Its so hilarious to them they laugh behind my back, and hes afraid they will kick him out of their club for telling me,in a contorted kind of way.I could be wrong.I guess its funny that lots of people are starving in the world, and as long as money is to be made by "rich"people off of others misery, they dont want to hear the truth.About right thurlow?

Ah........the root of the problem. Not understanding money or how it's made?
Quote" as long as money is to be made by "rich"people off of others misery". Unquote

Trucker40. Do you really believe that rich people make money off of other people's misery?
Do think that somehow because you work hard, you don't have money and yet rich people do have money. That somehow the rich people have stolen your money?
Ever thought of why some graduates from your grade 8 class make more than you?

Those people who are content to do what it takes to make $8-$10/hr. They will do those jobs.
Why is it that some people born into nothing do well? And others born with all the chances achieve very modest results?

Well, I think there is a lot we don"t know. I"ve heard the e-traders at wall street are a lot to blame. It seems that when Enron was manipulating oil prices they got some legislation through the nnalert controled congress that allowed them to e-trade the futures market with no oversight by the S.E.C. and since then prices have escillated. What Enron was trying to do, now the Wall Street Manipulators are doing. I also heard that they put the increase onto diesel because it would be less of an outcry from the public because most drive cars using gas. Oh yah, the amount of gas supply now is a LOT HIGHER today than a year ago! So much for the SHORT SUPPLY THEORY. Like I said there is a lot we don"t know, but I think after this November elections and a change in the white house and the congress, things will get a LOT better. Oh, I am a vietnam vet, so don"t try and tell me about keeping this country safe, and duty, country. We"re all Americans, and I"m sick and tired of the B.S. and the manipulators, what ever political party.

I can live without choclate bars and pop and it won't have much effect on my life but living without gasoline will have a major impact.

Just to point out, off-road, red-dyed, diesel here in Weatherford Texas is ultra low sulpher diesel with red-dye added. The local wholesaler of "no road tax" diesel does not have any diesel other than ULSD. I just bought 55 gallons about a week ago. Also all the stations and truck stops only have ULSD. Tom

Jiles I can only remember gas being as cheap as 39.9 cents a gallon. I had to be about 10 so that would have been mid seventies. I am sure dad was probably making about $4 bucks an hour back in those days. He retired a couple of years ago making $30 plus. So his wages went up and so the gas is still in synch with his wages. I think we all have a lot of leeway in our wages to buy gas. I think of it as a very important item so I can drop a lot of uneccessary items from my budget and still have plenty of money for gas. We get paid a lot of money in this country and we like to waste a lot of money because of this. If a mexican immigrant makes $2000 dollars a year in Mexico and comes to the USA and makes $10,000 his first year he is making 5 times the money he is used to and thinking he is in heaven. Try to pay an American $10,000 and they lose their minds. Difference is they have nothing and nothing to lose. We have buried ourselves in everything and are always stressing trying to maintain that. Not picking on you but how many Mexicans do you think own a Backhoe, two tractors, and an Kubota RTV over in Mexico or people in China? I am not worried about the cost of diesel and gas because I work very hard at a good job and live on much less than I make. My parents drilled that in my head and it works. I am a big Dave Ramsey fan and I live by his philosophy and it works great. Live like no other so some day you can live like no other. I would live in a cardboard box for a year if it would save me from spending $12,000 dollars a year on mortgage interest. I would rather see thousands of well maintained shanties with people with lots of money in them not stealing from me than a bunch of $300,000 dollar houses with forclosure signs hanging from them because the people that built them are idiots. Oh, and don't even get me going on bankruptcy scam that shouldn't be allowed to be happening!

Hey Matt check the tax on all three countries and see the real price paid for fuel...

MAY GOD BLESS THE USA

dan in houston is right anything in crude with more carbons then gas, such as tar, diesel, kerosine, ect, can be cracked and some of it can be turned into gasoline, anything with fewer carbons such as propane can't...i too can remember when dad had a store selling gulftane for 29.9....

There are a few high profile cases if you want to look at the situation with blinders on and see ony what you want to see.
A drop in the bucket compared to the cost of crime regular crime.I suppose you are grouping the middle and upper middle class with Enron?
If wasn't the poor or lower middle class that lost $$$ to Enron anyways so why are you complaining? You squawk the loudest and lost the least.
It was losses suffered by the middle and upper middle class in lost investment money and pension funds.
So again. How are you using Enron to justify only finishing high school, dropping out of of high school and settling for a low wage job? Then being upset your income doesn't support an upper middle class lifestyle?

Saw a front page article that said an area electric company has sent disconnect notices to half it customers.Co has 8 million in unpaid bills.Co I get power from has 34 million in unpaid bills.I read an article that predicted this two years ago. Looks like the author was right on.Fuel oil will be 5.00 a gallon in september. This is from a fuel dealer that has shut down his prebuy program.Post office is collecting food tomorrow.Oil is 125.00 a barrel. today.
