I have a 1988 ford ranger that has a 2.9L v-6 engine. My question is will a bad oxygen sensor cause it to idle rough and want to miss for just a second when you upshift. Also if you come to a stop sign and the engine goes from being reved to an idle it will kill itself. It has new plugs and wires.

Oxygen sensor or a sticky EGR valve will do the same.

start with the EGR- clean it up and see if that helps.

My 1987 Ranger has an EGR valve. I have had the engines out of three 1988 Bronco IIs and didn't find an EGR valve on any of them. My 1989 Ranger doesn't have one either. These are all 2.9L.

I have an 88 ranger.seem to remember reading somewhere you should change oxygen sensor every 80,000 miles

Have you reset the computer? Pull cable off, turn on headlights for 30 min then re-attach(I know, the lights won"t work butttt that"s what some say to reset computer). Are you getting a check engine light? It does have an older OBD I type system so a code may come up. Vacuum leaks tend to not show up on computer testers. MAF sensor -may- be bad, as well as others that were mentioned. Changed the fuel filter lately? www.therangerstation.com has a lot of troubleshooting advice.

Agree plus O2 sensor is what tells the ECM how rich or how lean to run. If you see extreme black smoke and little pieces of soot blowing everywhere out the exhaust pipe, that is one example of bad O2 sensor. There are others. EGR if sticking open is like a big vacuum leak.

Only thing is, on a truck of that year, the 'puter is NOT going to be looking at the O2 sensor at idle. The 'puter will IGNORE it at idle, since it cols down, and doesn't produce a usable signal anyway.

The automatic idle control on those Rangers leave a number of causes for those symptoms, of which the EGO sensor(O2 sensor, for everyone else) could be one. Do you have a service engine light? Are you able to check your stored codes?
