Off topic-gas powered wood splitters

Anyone have any advice/tips on gas powered hydraulic wood splitters. I have a 3 point unit for the tractor but am considering a gas powered model to pull behind the 4 wheeler in the woods. Seems the Swisher, TroyBuilt, and Brave units are the most common around here but am open to anything. I looked for online reviews, but couldn't find much.

Thanks: gwece

I have a 24 ton unit (8hp) manufactured by SPECO out of Colorado, I think. Just got finished running three tanks of gas thru it.

I think that is Special Industries Inc.

Think about that feature of being able to stand the cylinder viertically. Without that I would never be able to split much wood or use the huge pieces. Can't doo much lifting.

Also the wedge on the ram is my choice. Don't have to keep reaching in the next county to grab the split pieces, plus that is the only way the vertical cylinder could work.

I have a 21 ton MTD powered by a 5 HP Briggs & Stratton that I bought at Walmart 6-8 years ago and am happy with it. Be sure to get one that can be operated in the upright position so no lifting is required.

All the purchased ones are overrated as far as output tonnage. I don't know how they can legally sell them with the advertised tonnage so far out of wack. figure it up if you Don't believe me. With that said, buy one with the biggest cylinder you can find or build your own like we did!

If you would like an American made Cadillac of a splitter look at Timberwolf out of Vermont. They have some really neat features such as a log lifter and a catch basket to help keep you from having to bend over. They are expensive but they use the top of the line Honda engines and cylinders that can be rebuilt.

I like ours very much!
