I have mine off my 3000 to paint,
I have it cleaned up is there any problem flushing the mesh screen out with some grease remover to get out 38 years of use thanks del

No, just make sure it evaporates before you try and start the engine, so it doesn't run away. And oil the mesh with new oil.

Oil bath cleaners can and should be cleaned occasionally. Use a good solvent (gas or diesel works). I put the one off my TO-30 in a 5 gallon bucket and of diesel and let it sit for a few days, and then decanted off the cleaner diesel and dumped out the dirt and sludge then repeated the process several trtimes until there was hardley any sludge that came out. let it dry for a while after you clean it.

The filter is self oiling with oil from the oil cup at the bottom when you run the engine. The delta p from the air flowing through it pulls the oil up on the mesh and that traps the fine stuff. The heavy stuff never makes the 180° turn at the bottom of the air cleaner and it gets caught in the oil cup. When you shut down the oil runs off the mesh and into the cup and the dirt settles out. In really dirty conditions, you are supposed to check the oil several times a day and replace it if necessary. Use only the specified oil (Usually 30W) because if it"s too light an oil, you"ll pull it into the combustion chamber, and you"ll be trailed by "blue fog"!

use the same grade of oil as you use in your engine.

and that should be..

any of the hd oils like the 15w-40 chevron delo, mobile delvac, or shell rotella for most climates. availible at all walmarts, and autoparts in the "hd" oil section.

in extreame use, you can go to 5w-40 in the same brands... also mystic and a few others will work.

The best way is to use a steam-cleaner and run it through the air cleaner for about an hour. This will warm it all up and melt all the sluge out of it. It will be completely clean when you are done. When using cleaners or degertants you end up with that suff in the engine. Soaking in diesel will not cut the mustard! It will not desolve 50 year old hard clay dust compacted in the mesch.

What I do is get a metal 5 gallon bucket, sodium hydroxide, and a fish cooker and start cooking. If you can't get bulk sodium hydroxide just use a couple bottles of Red Devil Lye. Mix with water and heat to a slow boil.
Let it cook 15-30 minutes and what you have left is pure clean metal. No paint, oil, dirt, nothing. Just rince it off, dry, and prime quickly. It will have flash rust on it within hours. It will get the stuff out that you cannot get to. Will not harm good steel but will attack rust and aluminum.
